@kevinmac are you sure it's not your TV at fault? did you turn on 'game mode' on the AV channel it uses?

assuming your laptop is connected via hdmi then the pi will be affected in the same way, but i would assume you can improve the situation for both with 'game mode'

I did enable game mode on my TV and it only improved slightly. The lag is still noticeable on the TV. The strange part is on other consoles that use HDMI don't have this problem like PS1, PS2, PS3 etc. It could be my TV's fault but because there are no issues with other consoles, I am not so sure. Have you noticed any lag with your setup? Even slightly?

@kevinmac I haven't, no. however there have been updates to certain cores to reduce latency so it must be there to some extent (at least before)

@kevinmac , Game mode helps. I have found that my pi3 runs great on two of my 1080p tv's, no input lag. I had to turn on game mode on one of them. I noticed considerable input lag on my fathers 4k, I suspect the high resolution is to blame assuming the pi3 is trying to output at 4k. thats with a pi3 and retropie 4.

Thats great to know there is no lag on your TV. My TV is one of Samsungs top of the line 32 inch tv's. Its from last year. Here are the specs of my TV.

                Screen size: 32in,
                Native resolution: 1,920x1,080,
Video inputs: 4x HDMI, component, composite,
                Tuner: Freeview HD,
                Dimensions: 428x370x91mm

Would these settings be ok for retropie?

I think its one of those things where you just have to plug it in and see what happens... They don't really advertise the response time on tv's like they do lcd monitors. There are a lot of factors. IMO tvs that do more will probably have more lag, like smart tvs, but usually there is a gaming mode, its there for a reason. Basically gaming mode bypasses all the extra hoopla. I'd be interested to see if changing the resolution down to say 720p on the pi would give better response. Most of the games your running in retropie don't have anywhere near the resolution of 720p anyway.

Yes, changing the resolution would be a good idea. Is there an option to do that on the pi?

I'm sure there is but I have no idea how. Maybe someone knows.

changing resolution is trivial (https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/runcommand) but IMO not going to help. in fact, maybe changing to a non-display output resolution may increase the latency, as your tv now has to do a scaling operation.

Do you mean like Composite instead of HDMI?
