@ken-tipton No, that's the log file. I mean to get the contents of the /opt/retropie/configs/arcade/retroarch.cfg file and post it on pastebin.com.

@ken-tipton This looks like the file was saved from the RetroArch's menu or you enabled 'Save on Exit' and one of the settings is not correct (input_joypad_driver is set to null ?).
Rename the file and then install one of the arcade emulators (lr-mame2003 or lr-fbneo). This will re-generate the default configuration file that RetroPie sets and it should work.

                now the games load but

Asteroids is lagging and very slow
Donkey Kong no longer has the audio for mario walking. When game loads it says audio files are missing. where would the audio files go?

@ken-tipton Donkey Kong requires samples. See the docs for more info on that.

@thorr69 I have the sample files loaded here

                    /home/pi/RetroPie/BIOS/mame2003/samples
and I am using mame2003 to play Donkey Kong
When I open the zip file in the sample folder I can see 8 files in there.
DKStomp and Run 1-3 are present but these are the sounds I am missing

Can you post again the runcommand.log when the game lags ? Use pastebin.com again, instead of the forum post, the log is quite large.

It's in /dev/shm - the same log file you've posted previously. Make sure you enable verbose logging - https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Runcommand/#launch-with-verbose-logging.

@ken-tipton That's strange, because the log says the video resolution is 3072x2304, which a Pi3 doesn't support:

                                      [INFO] [Video]: Video @ 3072x2304

Given that the BIOS folder is also not detected

[WARN] SYSTEM DIR is empty, assume CONTENT DIR /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/arcade/asteroid.zip

I think this is another case of modifying or resetting the RetroArch configuration file and having bad configs. Probably that's why the samples were not working for dkong.

I advise you to change the retroarch.cfg to defaults - rename /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg and the re-install retroarch. Don't use the Reset Configuration from RetroArch's GUI, since the RetroArch's defaults will not properly work with the RetroPie setup (or the Pi). If you need something to be changed, then try to use Core/Game/System overrides so that the main configuration is kept intact.

@mitu thanks again for all your help.

do you think you can explain a little more what I need to do. I don't know how to do all the things that you just explained.

@ken-tipton not sure I understand - you've basically done the same thing a few posts back. Are you a different user than the original poster ?

@mitu same user just confused I guess.

I should rename the retroarch.cfg file I get that. then you said to re-install the retroarch. that is the part I am not sure how to do.
