      Hi,
I created this thread to discuss about our gaming experiences. This thread is not about your favorite games but more about your last experience and why it's a good game or not. We can put an overall rating on 10. We can talk about the gameplay, the speed on Retropie, the emulator used. etc.

j.j and jeff (Turbo Grafx 16)
        Global score 5/10
        Emulator : lr-beetle-pce-fast

Game like Adventure Island, but less fun. Bad gameplay and really tough game. You always need to save and reload to go foward (maybe it's me... i'm not enough good ๐Ÿ˜„). At the end, I have use cheat codes. Poor 90's kids who got that game for there birthday. They probably started that game from the beginning 1000 times before they could beat It!

1943 - The Battle of Midway (USA) (NES)
          Score: 6.5 / 10

          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1943:_The_Battle_of_Midway

The emulation seems perfect to me. There is some pretty hefty slowdown at times when the screen is full of bullets and enemies but I think the NES hardware also did this.

I strongly recommend using the turbo button function in RetroArch. After about level 9 I can't make much progress without turbo (my thumb / hand just hurts) and after level 14ish I end up using save states for some of the boss fights. Insane difficulty toward the very end. Level 24 (final level) boss sequence is nuts and I frankly don't know how many tries it would take to make it through on your single plane even with the level 24 password.

that's true, the end of that game is really tough. My top 3 toughest shooter games ever played are :

            • viewpoint (NEO GEO CD),
            • Raiden 1 (lr-fbneo),
            • Choushin Heiki Zeroigar (english translated) (PCFX)

Great games, but ........ so hard to beat.

              Score: 7 / 10

              Emulation is perfect.

I honestly had to tweak the controls because the run and shoot buttons felt... incorrect. The same way it feels when I try to play Turok haha. I loved this game as a child so heavy nostalgia factor. I think it's really fun and really underrated because it has a Disney character. It's one of my favorite platformers. Large sprites, enjoyable music, and fun, if not a bit simple, puzzles. I like how the levels chain together and the overworld map gives a (tiny) feeling of player agency.

                Neo Bomberman.
I'd give it a 7/10, I like all Bomberman games.

Has some neat mechanics that I've not seen in other Bomberman games, plus supports multiplayer and has achievements (got 29 out of 45, but I intend to resume playing and finish it).

I have never played a Bomberman game in my life. Shame on me. It will be one of my next games to play. Which one do you recommend me to play, if I only play one?

@DTEAM On RetroPie, Mega Bomberman (a port of Bomberman' 94 from the TurboGrafx) or Saturn Bomberman (said to be the best Bomberman). Windows only, Atomic Bomberman is also a blast (!). The Ports in RetroPie also include Bombermaaan, a fan made remake.

EDIT: the best way to experience Bomberman is of course, in multiplayer. Lots of fun bombing your friends and foes.

I think I had played an old bomberman game on the NES, but the one I spent the most time on is Super Bomberman (SNES) with the multitap. It is definitely a game best played with as many players as possible for maximum chaos.

i totally agree: when it is about local Multiplayer-Games for more than 2 players than it is Bomberman and MarioKart!

@mitu: nice to hear that you are also hunting for achievements! Now i have a goal to reach...i love the NG-Bomberman also very much!

Also great and also supporting Retro-Achievements: "Bomberman Party-Edition" (PS1).

Then why not the TurboGrafx/PCE version itself? According to Wikipedia, it has more multiplayer options than Mega Bomberman.

(Just curious, I don't know either of them in detail.)

I actually played them both, but for me the music sounds better in the MD port. But, enough with the Bomberman side-topic, I don't want to derail the main topic.

Yeah, back to topic: My last game played was Blazing Star for the Neo Geo in MVS mode. As a more casual SHMUP player, I like its relatively flat difficulty curve. In my first few tries, I actually beat the first two bosses with only one credit before I succumbed to the bullet hell that followed in the next level. But even that seems manageble with some practice and a handful more credits.

The awesome graphics and sound as well as the multiple selectable craft which actually play very differently give the game a very high replay factor.

Alas, the pandemic prohibits testing the 2P co-op mode at the moment, but hopefully that's only a matter of time.

Good game! Short but fun. For people who like short games like arcade games this is for you. Excellent emulation with Lr-yabasanshiro. Some sound issues when recording and reloading more than 10 times in a chapter. The sound come back on the next chapter. Really impressive 3D game for a mid 90's game.

It was a very good jrpg. The story isn't so deep but the gameplay mechanics are very interesting and fun. (9/10)

Not popular on retropie, but I really enjoy these like early 2010s lego games, even if it wasn't what I built my bartop for. I never had consoles or handhelds as a kid, so this is the next best thing. The cutscenes' graphics can be super janky sometimes, but otherwise it runs really well. The only annoying thing is that the drastic menu randomly pops up, and I need to use a keyboard to exit it. I could try a software update for the emulator to fix that.

It's hard to beat Voldermort with a mouse. The mouse doesn't emulate a finger well at all, so there is one level at the end of the game I cannot beat, at least without doing something cheaty like reducing the game speed.

Flashback on the Megadrive. It's the best version of the game but I've only played that and the Mega CD version which adds unnecessary music and voice work. It's a great looking game way ahead of its time
