I've just installed Retropie (3 times) and I keep getting the same issue.

There is no audio output in either ES or in the roms I play, however, if I load into Kodi the audio works fine.

    Whenever I go into the audio settings from the Retropie menu I get this error;

VolumeControl::init() - Failed to find mixer elements.

I've googled about and made sure the AudioDevice value in es_settings.cfg was set to HDMI

The only thing that does strike me as odd is that in the Retropie-setup script, when I go to audio the device is called "HDMI 1". And I'm pretty sure it was only "HDMI" in my previous setup before a fresh install.

Speaker-test from the CLI provides no audio output.

If I adjust the audio from within Sound Settings of the ES menu, it always bounces back to 0.

Any help would be most appreciated. I'm on a Pi3B using the latest Retropie image.

@kartillian Did you use the correct image? Pi4 has 2 HDMI outputs and would label them 1 or 2. Pi3, of course, does not.

What are your Audio setttings in EmulationStation (Card/Device) ? To use HDMI, you should have default as the Card and HDMI as Device.

Can you run from the command line

              aplay -l
              amixer

              and post the output ?

@mitu so I fixed the problem. Removing/Purging PulseAudio fixed it however, I now still get the error message.

VolumeControl::() - Failed to find mixer elements!

Is there anyway to get rid of the error message, like hide it or something?

@kartillian said in No Audio but only in ES / Roms:

I now still get the error message.

This means the Audio Device is not set properly in the EmulationStation settings. Make sure you have chosen 'HDMI' as the output in the Audio settings dialog in the RetroPie menu, then configure again ES with Default/HDMI as Audio Card/Device.

EDIT: I've merged your new topic here. Please don't open separate topics for the same issue.
