ZIP seems just not supported by Vice. Removing ZIP from the code I quoted above will make ZIP disappear from the config file that @camurso mentioned. So ZIPs won't show up anymore in ES.

@monstermadeofman quoted from the wiki the configuration from the file I mentioned: ex_systems.cfg

@camurso its es_systems.cfg. You can run zip files from systems that support it. For me everything now is not a zip except for my mame and fba but i used to have others zipped as well. I have never tried to use zipped roms on vice so i say unzip them then try.

Like I said, later, when I get home, I will try that ;)
BTW: Some emulators other than mame accept zip files (megadrive, nes, snes, etc), since I can play roms without any problem...

Very true. I keep everything zipped that is at all possible for space reasons, but I've never had any luck running zipped C64 titles. Everything I've read tends to imply that this is only a feature found in WinVICE and even there it seems to require the external application 'unzip.exe' being placed in the application's root directory and working in tandem at launch.

Ok, I unzipped all my files and got .crt files.
I choose to play one of them and now I get a blue/purple screen and nothing more...

It could be that it's working fine now, it just takes quite a while for the games to load. There's a built-in turbo mode that can be triggered to quickly get you past this. VICE can even be set to launch with turbo enabled and many times it will disable itself when the game fully loads.

@mediamogul I have the same problem with .crt files. ES seems to direct VICE to try to load them like disk images. If I enter the control system and load them directly with the emulator they start right up. .crt files are cartridges that have no real load time in the emulator when it works correctly.

There may be more to it than this, but it seems like this could be remedied by adding an entry to specifically handle these files into /opt/retropie/configs/c64/emulators.cfg. Something like:

                        vice-x64-cart = "/opt/retropie/emulators/vice/bin/x64 -cartcrt %ROM%"

and then changing default emulator for the rom files to "vice-x64-cart" when you launch them the for the first time. Of course, even if that worked it would be constantly overwritten each time there was an update.

Something else that might be worth trying is adding "-cartcrt" with a space afterward to the beginning filename of the rom. If it worked, it wouldn't be overwritten in an update and you could change the appearance of the name back to something pretty using Emulation Station's metadata.

I just tried loading a few .crt files and I didn't have any trouble using the stock RetroPie setup. I also tried the two suggestions that I made above and the files also launched each time, so they are at least functional options to try. Other than that, I would try obtaining the cart files from another source and see if that helps.

@mediamogul i am unable to play the crt games directly either. Plays when loaded from inside the emulator. If i pick the game in es it displays the game name half garbled in c64 boot screen and it says ready but stays indefinitely on a blinking cursor underneath ready inside of c64.

@ambaratur @camurso @mediamogul ok so i found out the issue with crt games. Go into retropie menu, choose retropie setup. Then in there update retropie-setup. Then when that finishes go into manage packages, optional packages and choose vice and install from binary. Dont uninstall first. No need to lose your settings. The latest version of vice loads .crt files great and instant. It also fixes issues that were created while using scanlines. Disks load pretty fast now too.

Ah, OK. I already have the latest version, so I guess that's why I wasn't having any issues.

@edmaul69 : I'm not 100% sure, but I think I made an update some days ago, but I will do that later when I get back from work. It's 09:38AM, so my day is just beginning :)
