At last the Zero 2has been released!)
What are your thoughts on specs and if it’s going to be worth upgrading handheld projects to one?

That's a pi3 downclocked at 1Ghz, that's way better than the older model, you'll be able to play lots of games that couldn't run well on pi0 because of crappy old emulators limitation and abysmal performance.

Sounds good! Up to now I never thought about buying Retroflags GPi Case, but with that variant of the Zero I may reconsider that :D

I really hope the GPi case works with it, we'll finally be able to run SNES games with modern cores.

As for RetroPie, should the existing 2/3 version be compatible? I hope so!

The 4.7.1 image is not compatible, but a weekly snapshot image should work.

I cant wait to try systems that didnt run full speed on the original Zero W.

              Specially:

              • 32X games (it was impossible to run them at decent speed on Zero 1)
              • SNES SFX games.

I hope it is compatible with the retroflag GPI case :D Can anyone confirm when they receive the Zero 2?

Very nice upgrade. The only thing I didn't like was the lack of H.265 hardware decoding.

Apologies wrote a different thread and didn't realise this was already here, I've ordered one and a pin header. Annoyingly they're not selling a version with the gpio pins so gotta solder them on yourself.

I've got a retroflag gpi so will be trying this out and seeing what we can squeeze out of it. There was a surprising amount that would work on the old pi0w (blade runner and curse of monkey island from scummvm worked very well which was a pleasant surprise)

I doubt N64 would run, but definitely can see the SNES emulation being abit better

@retropieuser555 I wouldnt hold my breath for N64. Remember how it ran on a Raspberry Pi 3 (not great), and the Zero 2 has the same amount of cores, but at 1 Ghz instead of 1.2 Ghz. I Assume it would be 10-20% slower than a raspberry pi 3 overall.

@suppafly yeah I had a pi3b (not a +) and it was ok for N64 if you were willing to accept there's only a few games it'll run, so wouldn't put much hope in that

Mh, If you had ordered one with the GPIos allready in place (if such would have been possible), than you wouldn't be able to try it in the GPi Case, ain't it so?

But citing from the sellers description in the OTs link:

The successor to the breakthrough Zero W, Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W is a drop-in replacement for the original board, with the same form factor, connectors and mounting holes. Perfect for a project upgrade!

Sounds like there shouldn't be a problem with the case (Well, duno so far about the power consumption and shortened playtime because of such).

Maybe squeeze a little more performance out of this:

@ashpool oh wait, you're right, I forgot the pi zero I got for the gpi was header less, d'oh! Oh well, spare header isn't a bad thing for another project.

I guess there's a couple of things that wouldn't run on the older arm version of the pi zero. Might be amusing (if incredibly impractical) to see if drastic will run for example

@mitu So use the 2/3 image for the zero 2?

Just got my first zero 2's and looking to put one in my GPI case over the weekend.

Surprisingly, I received mine this morning. Well, I can confirm it boots and works with at least one Xbox 360 wireless controller, with the latest weekly snapshot image as @mitu mentions above :)

I'll hopefully have time to do some actual proper testing either later on today or tomorrow.

@kenjara I'd be really interested to see how that works and whether I should get one (assuming they don't all sell out); I know that RasPi are saying that the form factor is the same, but it'd be interesting to know how the power of the Zero 2W affects battery life.

OK, had a chance to have a quick look over my lunch break - copied a few games over to it, changed a few settings and then for some reason, any time I tried to set up any controller, the controller setup screen froze and I had to F4 out of it.

Tried a few things, deleting the controller configs etc and that didn't work. Then I remembered that I'd changed the GPU memory split from 256MB to 64MB. Once I'd changed that back to 256MB, I could then set up the controllers and get that working OK. I tried a few different settings and now have GPU memory set to 96MB with no issues.

Default PS1 and SNES emulators load games OK; controllers aren't working so I wasn't able to test the games. I suspect I may have messed something up when deleting the controller mapping, but I'll have a look later.

That's all I've had a chance to do today.

@mitu - is there a particular place you'd like any Zero 2W specific issues logging, or should I just wait for the devs to get hold of their own? :)
