I just started using retropie and emulation station, going to build out a cabinet soon. but i noticed MK2 and 3 has no sound. when i play them on my PC with mame emulator i am able to adjust volume. i can't seem to find anything in the options for emulation station other than starting with different emulators, i tried all of them still no sound??

MK II, MK3, and UMK3 all run in Mame2003 (with proper 0.78 roms) with sound on my pi3. I will grant that the sound is a bit lower on these for some reason, but if you increase you pi's audio to maximum, you shouldn't have an issue. To do that, use the "start" button in Emulation Station, then navigate to Sound Settings. Set System Volume to 100%. Lower it if you need to after testing.

There is also a volume control in the service menu.

The audio on these arcade machines was originally very quiet, so the emulation is accurate.

See here for understanding MAME and checking ROMs are correct: https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Managing-ROMs

Or just google "mame2003 reference set".

@thanosazlin mame has romsets. .78 version is for mame version .78. Romset 1.06 goes to mame version 1.06..... Mame has a ton of versions of roms.

@thanosazlin said in arcade mortal kombat 2 and 3 no sound:

Those numbers are the Board revisions of the Arcade game. Midway was particularly terrible for releasing unfinished product, and updating it later.

The roms are dumps of these boards, but sometimes romsets for newer versions of mame change when a better dump of a board is found, as sometimes the chips aren't dumped optimally. Older romsets are needed for some games in older versions of mame, and these are sometimes not the most readily available version of the roms, but the zip file containing them may have the same name. Thus you follow the instructions at

fyi you can adjust the audio in mk games via the service menu: https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/lr-mame2003#service-menu

thanks all, i'll have a look around as for the F2 menu, i'm using rasp pi 3 that is going in an arcade cabinet so only controller/joystick no keyboard. but i guess i could just set it , states it is permanent and if i come across other games in future just temp connect a keyboard and F2 them, unless there is some secret way with a joystick or game pad to access the same menu?

F2 worked, it got me into M2k setup/test menu. i was able to change the vol but i can't figure out how to exit the menu in Mk2 and have the vol change stay? i press F3 it like it reboots the game if i hit F4 it goes to a color palate and i have to turn off rasp pi and back on it as it hangs.
