Chinese characters displays question mark on emustation
-
I tried install Fonts-droid-fallback but it doesn't do the trick, the characters are still just a bunch of ???
Anyone know if there's a workaround? -
What theme are you using ? Does the font used by the theme supports Chinese (Han) characters ? Also, what system are you running EmulationStation on ?
-
@mitu I'm using a raspberry pi 4b to run, and using the default carbon theme.
the font "droid" which used in the carbon theme does not
have Chinese characters, but the droid san fallback does, so I followed some guide on the internet and installed it:sudo apt-get install fonts-droid-fallback --fix-missing
It did not work, the UI is still the same with all the question marks
Then I followed this guide and tried to change font of the carbon theme, I downloaded Microsoft Yahei.ttf and moved there, replaced the default Cabin-Bold.ttf, then rebooted, but this time the emustation crashes and took me to console, desplaying follows:emulationstation: /home/pi/Retropie-Setup/tmp/build/emulationstation/es-core/src/resources/Font.ccp:21: Font : :FontFace : :FontFace(ResourcesData&&, int): Assertion '!err' failed

I have a ROM file with Chinese chars and it's displayed fine, no extra configuration needed.
Are you using RetroPie (which version ?) or did you manually compiled EmulationStation ? What version of EmulationStation are you using ?
-
@mitu
I used retropie image downloaded from the official website, flashed into an sd card using etcher.Two questions:
- how to check version?
- Do you mean Chinese characters works right out of the box with the latest retropie version? If so, where can I get the latest version?
-
how to check version?
Version of what ? For EmulationStation, the version is shown when you open the main menu. For RetroPie, it should be shown when you start the RetroPie-Setup script from the RetroPie system in EmulationStation
Do you mean Chinese characters works right out of the box with the latest retropie version? If so, where can I get the latest version?
Latest version of the RetroPie image is at https://retropie.org.uk/download/. Once you install it, you should be able to update it - including EmulationStation - to the latest version from the setup script.

@mitu
The emulationstation version is v2.10.0RP
The retropie version is 4.7.19
Updated the script just now and still is 4.7.19, and there are still question marks -
Please provide the rest of the info asked in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first.
You should upload the
gamelist.xml
for the system where the faulty files reside, to make sure it's not been incorrectly generated. -
