I'm struggling with Battlezone and a control scheme close to the original. On the forums (from 2-3 years ago) it looks like people had success with adv mame, but when I launch it, it just goes back to emulation station. LR-MAME is the only one that seems to work.

That being said, I can't seem to get a control scheme set up like the original 2-joystick arcade. Does anyone have any advice on how to set this one up?

      Thanks!

That's gonna happen a lot if you launch random arcade romsets with random arcade emulators without reading https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Arcade/

Without knowing what kind of controller you are using ? On a modern gamepad, i think mapping left stick to L/L2, right stick to R/R2, and fire to B is perfect, but that might not be what you are using as a controller.

@barbudreadmon It works fine in LR-MAME. And sorry, I'm using a stand up arcade cabinet with two arcade joysticks, 6 buttons each.

Yes, and you don't know why it doesn't in advmame because you didn't read the documentation i linked.

Imho, avoiding the sticks and mapping everything to your 6 buttons is probably the best choice, 2 reasons :

            • most likely, your sticks aren't 2-ways, so only using up/down might be tricky
            • pressing the fire button at the same you hold your 2 sticks seems tricky

But maybe someone will have a better recommendation.

@barbudreadmon I take the advice from these forums very seriously. I did read that page, but since the rom worked in LR-MAME, I wasn't sure what point you were trying to make. I'm sure I have the wrong rom set of Battlezone to work in Advmame, but will have to look into that later. I'm still learning how to verify romset versions.

You make a great point on avoiding the joysticks altogether and using buttons only. I do see the setup when hitting tab. Do you happen to have a screen shot of yours that works?

              Thanks!

@drdave79 So, I'm also using a twin-stick setup with six buttons per stick, laid out like this:

                Y X L
                B A R

                My Battlezone config is this:

                bzcfg.jpg

So I have three options, all of which which I can switch between during the game any time I feel like it without having to pause.

                (1) the four leftmost buttons to control the tank tracks, and the top-right button to fire (very comfortable)

                (2) the two sticks to control the tank tracks and the Y and B buttons on the second stick to fire (also pretty comfortable)

                (3) the left joystick for the left track, the left X and A buttons for the right track, and the right L button to fire (also pretty comfortable).

Raspberry Pi 3b and 8GB Raspberry Pi 4, both running Retropie 4.7.1 installed from scratch using Raspberry Pi Imager, with wired keyboard, wireless mouse and double arcade joystick attached.

@jimmyfromthebay That's very helpful, thanks for responding. With that set-up, I found that Y & X did the same movement as B & A. So not sure what the difference is, but it worked pretty well. What emulator are you using? Your screen shot looks different than mine. I'm using AdvMame .94

@drdave79 on a sidenote, i was thinking about this game over the past few days, and came up with a nice "hack" to provide simplified inputs for this game in FBNeo :

                      • pressing "up" will trigger "Right Up" & "Left Up", meaning you'll go forward
                      • pressing "down" will trigger "Right Down" & "Left Down", meaning you'll go backward
                      • pressing "left" will trigger "Right Up" & "Left Down", meaning you'll turn left
                      • pressing "right" will trigger "Right Down" & "Left Up", meaning you'll turn right

I'm thinking of trying to use diagonals to also map the 4 remaining combinations later today. Done, all 8 combinations are now usable from the 8-ways stick or dpad, and i think it fits quite nicely :

                      • pressing "up"+"right" will trigger "Left Up", meaning you'll go right forward
                      • pressing "down"+"right" will trigger "Left Down", meaning you'll go right backward
                      • pressing "up"+"left" will trigger "Right Up", meaning you'll got left forward
                      • pressing "down"+"left" will trigger "Right Down", meaning you'll left backward

(the non-"hacked" versions of those controls are still mapped to their usual place, meaning L/L2/R/R2)

I forgot to mention it but i rarely use MAME (i'm actually a FBNeo developer), so i can't provide you a screenshot of MAME's OSD.

@barbudreadmon that's fine, I got it to work. Thank you for your work on FBNeo! I appreciate all that you contribute.
