Not detecting controllers

@sirhenrythe5th retropie, thank you.
-
@pelotudo please provide details of your setup. See https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first
-
Pi model - raspberry pi 4 model B
Power supply - power quick charge 3.0/ 5v 3a
Retropie version - not sure, only says 128 gb retropie
Built from - ordered pre-built from Amazon
USB connections - 2 snes USB controllers that came with it.This problem started when I tried to connect it to a different TV, it worked fine until then. I dropped it once from a 1 foot fall, but it worked fine. Is it fragile? That's all the info I could find, hope it helps. I apologize I'm not a techy guy, I purchased it specifically for games. Thank you.

Third-party builds are not supported. Further, RetroPie's license does not allow for it to be sold, (this includes providing it "free with purchase" in a commercial product). If you paid for RetroPie, you paid a scammer. You should report them to Amazon and ask for a refund.

This is why they aren't supported. It just is not at all practical for us to try and troubleshoot a system that neither you nor we know anything about. Ask the scammer who sold it to you for help.
Or you can start fresh with the supported, official installation and, since this is a known starting point, we can help you get it set up just the way you like it. Start here: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/First-Installation/#installation

@sleve_mcdichael ok so let me understand this, is it illegal to sell the retropi but not he raspberry? If I wanted to purchase a raspberry pi 4, would I be able to do that? I understand that purchasing roms is illegal but I figured I was paying for the raspberry and having someone set up with roms.
It's not that I disbelieve you, I'm just dumbfounded about this lol. I paid $200 dollars for it, how much does a raspberry cost regularly? If I fix the raspberry I have now, would I be able to re install retropi on it?
Sorry to bombard you with questions, I know very little about these things, I had no idea it was illegal, if I did I would not have purchased it. Thank you for the help, I appreciate it.

Pretty much, yeah. If someone wants to sell a product that's meant for use with RetroPie, it is requested that they include a link to download it rather than pre-installing it on the product itself. Whether it's "illegal" depends on jurisdiction (people in Argentina don't necessarily have to follow UK copyright law, for example), but it is in violation of the terms of use, for whatever that's worth.

About $35 for the board itself. With case, cords, power supply, a tiny fan, and a pair of cheap Chinese USB gamepads, I think I spent about $100 overall. Then later I added a nice wireless Logitech gamepad for an additional $40.
If I fix the raspberry I have now, would I be able to re install retropi on it?
Absolutely. Start with the link in my post above. That will show you the basics of where to get RetroPie and how to install it. If some part is giving you trouble, we'll do our best to help you get over the hurdle.

@sleve_mcdichael great thank you, is there a way to do that without the use of gamepads? I can't get it to detect the gamepads at all, so I pretty much can't do anything with it. I believe (with my limited knowledge on these things) that the USB ports are bad because it won't detect gamepads or keyboards. Can I bypass it somehow?
Edit: nevermind that's a stupid question, if the USB ports are bad I can't use it anyway. I will try to repair or return it. Thank you.
-
@pelotudo yeah if the drop busted the USB ports then it won't be much good, but if it was just a configuration issue, it might be corrected when you re-install.
-
@sleve_mcdichael is that a normal thing? Is it that fragile?
-
@pelotudo I don't know, I haven't dropped mine. That's why I suggested it might work out okay once you install the official image. Can't hurt, in any case. You can always backup the SD card first, if you want to preserve what's on it now (since the installation will wipe it clean). You can use a program like win32diskimager (if you're on Windows) to save the backup SD image, then download the RetroPie image from the link and write it to the card. Then put the card back in the Raspberry Pi and see if the controllers/keyboard work.
-
@sleve_mcdichael got it, I will do that. Thank you for your time you've been very helpful.
-
@sleve_mcdichael I just realized why you mentioned Argentina in your prior post. Is that because of my name pelotudo?
-
@pelotudo haha no it was just a random country I could think of that was far away from UK both on the globe and in the alphabet.
-
@sleve_mcdichael lol, the term pelotudo is mainly used in argentina and uruguay. I'm uruguayan, I thought you thought I was Argentinian.
-
@sleve_mcdichael I just ordered the canakit, next I will get an SD card and download retropi unto it. What if I use the SD card from the broken raspberry, will it work?
-
will it work?
Probably.
-
@sleve_mcdichael So I just got a canakit, I put it together and burned retropie unto a new SD card. I have a USB flash drive with the retropie folder, but I can't get it to read the roms. I download a rom on my computer, I copy it unto the flash drive and then insert into the raspberry. But nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?
-
@pelotudo I've only done it over WiFi but looking at the docs, it looks like you're supposed to:
- take a usb stick with nothing on it except a "retropie" folder.
- connect it to the Pi. Wait for it to copy the folder structure over to the usb stick.
- take the usb stick and put it in your computer. Put the roms on the stick.
- put the stick back in the Pi. Wait for it to copy the roms over.
Is this what you did?
-
@sleve_mcdichael yes, I've actually managed to download 2 nes games, it's the MAME games that won't transfer over. Do arcade games require something different? So far I am able to download home console games only with no problem.
-
Do arcade games require something different?
I don't think so. What folder are you putting them in?
