I'm trying to get Tailgunner to run, and while it works fine visually in mame2003, the sounds simply don't work. Has anyone managed to get Tailgunner to work with sound, and if so, which emulator do you use?

@wolfgangrumpf just tested mame2003-plus and the sound doesn't work there either. Also I don't understand how the controls work, sometimes the aiming reticle won't respond at all other times I can only move it up and down or left and right (not both).

Tailgunner runs under lr-mame 0.222 very well, but you'd have to downgrade from current/master. Any MAME after 0.222 uses a different audio system that the Raspberry Pi cannot handle. You'll still need samples for "tailg". Place the ZIP in ~/RetroPie/BIOS/mame/samples

Here is the github tag for lr-mame 0.222. It looks like this was the last commit.

Perhaps the lr-mame script can be leveraged to build 0.222.

FWIW, I'm running some games with 0.222 and others with latest. Takes a little finagling in /opt/retropie/emulations/libretro, but for me, worth it.

Here's a video I just recorded using MAME 0.222 with runahead 1 frame.

Runahead doesn't work with mame cores, only mame2003+ has partial support.

Ah, you're, of course, correct. It's enabled, but not affecting gameplay in MAME. Cheers. lr-fbneo needs some Cinematronic love @barbudreadmon

Yeah, i know, it's the only vector system we don't support and has been on my todo list for a very long time.

@roslof Fantastic - I'll work on getting that set up, thanks! I'm assuming that there is a rom set that is lr-mame 0.222 specific? Any pointers on where I can find that?

@roslof Okay, another question - I'm good with the terminal (I'm a linux guy), but I've never installed directly from git on RetroPie - which directory should I navigate to before cloning and building lr-mame 0.222?

@barbudreadmon Cinematronics is one of my favorite vector systems - do you have a timeline for getting it working in lr-fbneo?

I just checked and learned that samples are supported for Tailgunner starting with lr-mame2010 .

Recommendation (so you don't have to jump through a million hoops to get 0.222) -- Just install lr-mame2016 and ensure the emulator launching the game is lr-mame2016 instead of your current default.. Find the samples from the link I posted above and ensure they are in your BIOS directory for MAME 2016. Typically: /home/pi/RetroPie/BIOS/mame2016/samples/tailg.zip

                        Enjoy!

No, this is a hobby, we don't accept requests and for the same reason we'll never tell you when a game will be supported.

If you update to the latest build Tailgunner will now have sound in MAME2003+

Mind and thank @mahoneyt944 for taking the time to hook up the samples which you can obtain via twistys mame samples site

@arcadez2003 no problem. @wolfgangrumpf mind you to disable center joystick axis for digital controls in the core options so it does not auto center the controls.
