I'd like to test Future Wars on ScummVM, the DOS CD version. I unzipped the files all into one folder and added the game in the ScummVM gui. ScummVM recognized the game and added it to the list. So I start ScummVM, and in the GUI I find the game and select start game. "Sony Interactive" appears briefly, then the small gray box appears again with the words start scummvm (press a key to config...). Shortly thereafter I am (funnily enough) in the interface of the emulation station not in the ScummVM-Gui. Anyone have an idea what I can try?

@10vorne I try this game with standalone Scummvm and it's working without this issue. If you are using lr-scummvm try the standalone .

@windg I`m not sure what you mean, installing ScummVM on Windows/Mac/Linux without Retropie?

RetroPie have 2 versions of ScummVM. One is the standalone with the name ScummVM and the other is the Libretro variant lr-scummvm. The grey box is the runcommand, it is something normal. you can read more about it here : https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Runcommand/ .

Ok, runcommand. Of course I know that from all other emulators and use it too switch Emus, I just didn't know what to call it. I didn't see on Retropie's doc page that there are two ScummVM emulators, so I was confused. With the other emulators, it is always included in the documentation if there are several. I will test that.

@windg I've tested it again now without success. I had the standalone variant installed, lr-scummvm not. Now the question is, what is the difference between our two setups if you have no problems. I start the standalone version of ScummVM via the ES, select Future Wars in the menu and start it, I briefly see a black screen with the Sony logo, then the Runcommando box appears and the game returns to the emulation station GUI. I only found one source for the CD version of Futurewars and it also said it runs fine with ScummVM. Other scummvm-games runs fine on my system. Any idea what else I could test?

Maybe your rom have antipiracy protection this is why it doesn't run .

@windg The Scumm VM Wiki Future Wars states that the following files must be in the directory. Are they in your folder?:

                    DOS

                    *.DAT
                    *.PAL
                    .PRC
                    BASESON.SND
                    PART

I don't think about anti-piracy. The source of the ROM already states in detail the compatibility of the ROM with ScummVM and also no negative comments, of course I can't be sure. Are you using the DOS CD version?

So, I just installed Scummvm on my Mac and ran the same version of Future Wars, works fine. The Sony logo appears and then it continues, ie at the point where Retropie shows me the runcommand box and jumps back to the emulation station. The source page of the rom also mentions that the protection has been removed and that the game runs perfectly with Scummvm. Any other ideas what I could try?

                        Contents seems the same...

I try the game on the Rpi4 and on the Rpi3. On the first is running fine on the RPi3 is crashing with the same way you describe

So, if you have a Rpi3, when you add the game choose from Scummvm menu :

Edit Game > Graphics > click to Override global graphic settings and change the Graphic mode to OpenGL. Then press ok and try again. It work for me i hope will work for you too.

@windg That was it. I already had the question on my lips "should I perhaps install scummvm-sdl?" :)

So I did it as you described. However, the intro crashed on the first try, and I couldn't get into the system via ssh either. It worked on the second try, I'll see. But I'm a step further, thanks for thinking along.
