Odd goings on.

When I first bought my Raspberry Pi, I did so because I saw a YouTube video of someone with one with RetroPie and a lot of the systems and games on it that me and my friends had in the 90s.
As it was a small unit, for me it was great as I didn't have to have a proper computer to play the games on, and when not in use could be put away neatly until next time.
After setting it up, one of the first things I put on was the 3do emulator as several friends had it, and was one we could all reminisce over when it my turn to host our gathering. It was slow, but a few of the games were playable enough like Alone in the Dark 2, even though the odd frame skipped and sound jerked occasionally.
Next, PlayStation 1 as this was one of the core systems we all had in common. 40 or so games here...
As im older, Atari 2600, Vectrex, ZX Spectrum along with my friends choices of Sega Megadrive and MasterSystem, SNES and Nintendo 64. And of course the Arcade cabinets we spent our money on as kids.
All this was great, as I was running games from an SD card. The card got full rather quick, so I bought a 4TB Seagate external drive to put everything on and have it connected to the Pi.
I've found the more systems and games going on there, I'm getting some unexpected results. Not sure why? For some reason or other, halfway through playing Sonic on the Megadrive, it locked up. Couldn't select and hotkey back to the menus but when I switched it off and back on, not all the systems were showing.
After that resolved, the Amiga bit started playing up. Then the Atari 2600, 5200 and 7800 disappeared from the menus and came back after many resets.
Bit disappointed that its a bit temperamental. I know 0% about Linux and relying on YouTube videos to sort things. Now Ive put Dragon32 on there, put the correct BIOS in the correct folder and games in the dragon32 folder and they don't show up in the menu.
Just seem to be having more problems and issues the more thats going on to the drive.
Do you think its an issue with the 4TB drive. So scared of turning it off when it locks up in case data corrupts as I really don't think I could go through putting all those emulators and games back on if something goes horribly wrong.
Some advice would be really appreciated!
