mame 2003 plus Star Wars dip switches not taking

I'm running Star Wars on mame 2003 plus on a Pi4 with GRS yoke. Its running sweet but I cannot get the dip switches to work. It doesn't matter what I set them to, nothing changes. I had previously been running a Pi3B and Advmame 3, the dipswitches worked on that setup. Is there a setting in Retroarch I've missed or do they just not work on Star Wars? I think I read elsewhere that the implementation of the switches was broken in the driver, but this was from a thread more than a year back. Its not a deal breaker but I would like to be able to change the settings from default.

I've managed to get somewhere with this. I was looking at the rom history on another website and it seems the dip switch function is broken in the driver. The workaround is to make the changes in service mode. I have tried this and can verify that it works. Changing them from the mame menu would be better, but as its usually only a one-off change, I'll live with it.
