      Raspberry Pi is stuck on boot screen in middle of installing a package.
      Failed to open device: 'sdcard' (cmd 333a0010 status 1fff0207)
      Think I also read something about an
      xHC error

        Looks like a sdcard corruption of some kind. I assume that the diagnostics boot screen on the Pi4 shows that the sdcard is detected ?
        Check if you can read the sdcard on another system, if the boot partition is not readable (it should be, whether you're using Windows/macOS or Linux) then you may need to reflash the sdcard from scratch.

          @mitu I thought the reply might be about a possible SD error. I started a new image, it's a shame as I'd updated a large number of retropie packages...

          But it must detect the SD, right, or it wouldn't do anything at all?

            The boot diagnostic screen on the Pi4 shows if the SD Card is detected or not - see below.

            When I said

            the diagnostics boot screen on the Pi4 shows that the sdcard is detected

            I was referring to that particular part of the boot screen. If the SDCard would not have been detected, it would have been an issue with the card slot/connection being damaged or with the card itself.

              @mitu It's listed as detected.

                @mitu It might be better/easier though to fix this install though, since it is further along and I have access to the command line:

                  I'm not familiar with that modification, you can ask in the forum post where the script has been posted.

                    @mitu There hasn't been a reply on that thread in months...

                    I'm getting both an 'xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused' response to StartX
                    and a response " *failed to add service - already in use?" to emulationstation.

                    Do you think it is related to autologin settings? It's as though both the services are started but I'm outside them (I guess because George's script itself called Xinit ... though I uninstalled Meso, Box86 and Wine).
