Gameplay Area res switched with overlay change...

The overlay covers the game play area so I tried working my way thru RetroArch settings, I got the overlay removed but when I returned to the game the resolution was changed to ft the entire screen stretching it out horizontally. I undid the changes and got the overlay back but now the resolution remains. Any tips? I tried multiple search fwiw! Thanks
