    Using latest image from official site, we have to update various packages...Is there a way to build an updated retropie image and then install?

      Yes, install a RaspiOS Lite 10 (buster) image and install RetroPie manually. This will get you an installation using the latest packages, without going through an update. Not much of a difference between the 2 ways, but why not ?

          Is that what image.sh does? Some of it is over my head but it looks like it is downloading a Raspbian-lite image, then "injecting" a RetroPie-Setup (from the GitHub, so current updates) into it.

            @sleve_mcdichael Yes.

            For example ./retropie_packages.sh image all buster would build rpi1, rpi2/3 and rpi4 images based on buster.
