bullseye 64 bit support

Hi,

this has been asked before a few times, but i was wondering: Is there already an outlook when a 64 bit bullseye image will be supported?

i never tested bullseye with retropie, but already did some testing on 64 bit buster in the past by manually compiling retroarch and the lr-mupen64plus core, to find out quite a big increase in performance compared to the default (and yes i used the same settings: I did a one-on-one copy of the configfiles...

So have been waiting for a while to get it officially supported by retropie. Do we have an idea when that is going to happen?

that's good news! From source is fine. Does this also work on bullseye or only on buster?

I really love RetroPie and this isn't meant to pile on in any way, but I have a few clarifying questions as this is the first I've heard that there's no plans currently for an image, which is to me as close as you can get to an "official" release for Bullseye.

I know a lot of folks have been installing manually on 64-bit Bullseye --- how is the state of play right now? Anything blocking or really bad, especially for non- optional / experimental emulators? How are the video drivers? Is there any reason to wait at this point if anyone wants to move forward? Past tweaks from default settings that's not documented at this point (some folks were doing so in the past with video)?

If the issues are more about integrating RetroPie into a fresh OS install better (I saw the recent checkin around Bullseye changes for default logon credentials, for example), then maybe it's time for me to do it.

I'd love the performance boost and get on a newer version of Kodi. I also just like being on the newer side of software as a personal preference. But it's some work and I'd probably follow the recommendations of the community if it means just doing it once.

I'm assuming the rough process is (as an in place OS upgrade is not recommended and an architecture jump is impossible I think):

1. Flash Bullseye 64-bit lite (https://www.raspberrypi.com/software/operating-systems/#raspberry-pi-os-64-bit)

2. Manual install of RetroPie (https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Manual-Installation/)

3. Copy over /config and /roms from a previous install, hopefully not too many incompatibilities.

@ParadoxGBB I can't advise as I've had little time to test/look at it. I've been very busy.

There are plans for a bullseye image. Just not 64bit. It may come in the future - right now I'm working on the next Bullseye release (32bit).

@akamming You may have some success on bullseye. It's not officially supported yet and there will likely be some issues.

@ParadoxGBB Retroarch emulators work on 64bit bullseye lite. I haven't tested the rest.

Audio doesn't work right now. To get it working, I used to use the audiosettings.sh from cmitu's audio-ks dev branch, but a recent update in that branch broke it.

'my branch' has been merged into RetroPie-Setup for at least a month.

I am testing the latest weekly image, i know that this image is not tested and stable, but i don't have audio too.

@windg Did you configure the audio from the RetroPie's Audio settings ?

I set the audio output to HDMI 0. I set also sound card from Headphones to vc4-hdmi-0 but still don't have sound.

From ES sound settings, audio card set to Default and audio Device set To HDMI, with the system volume to stay to zero,

Post your $HOME/.asoundrc file.

This usually means you haven't configured the Audio from the RetroPie system.

After i changed the audio to HDMI 0 i check in the mixer and it's still says Headphones, also the old issue with "fail to find mixer elements" appearing.

I'll take a look to see what's going on, after using the Audio settings, you should have a $HOME/.asoundrc file used by ALSA choose the correct sound output.

Do you have installed the desktop or PulseAudio ?

@mitu No i haven't install it. I flash a fresh copy of weekly image (08-Aug-2023) few minutes ago just to be sure that i didn't modify something that i don't remember.

Actually, the audiosettings have moded to /etc/alsa/conf.d/99-retropie.conf, can you check to see if you have that file and - if yes - post the contents ?

Alsa folder doesn't exist

That could explain the issue. Can you manually create the folder with sudo mkdir /etc/alsa/conf.d/ and re-configure again the Audio ?
