Searched the forums and there's almost no current discussion on this.

Best I found was a two post thread on how it can be done.

Curious if anyone has tried with the Pi 4.

What packs were used (links would be nice) and how were the results?

    Link example:
    https://evilgames.eu/texture-packs/oot-reloaded.htm

Just wondering if it's worth the time going down that rabbit hole.

    Cheers. :)

as far as the N64-Emulation still struggles on the Pi4 with a lot of un-modified games i really doubt that it will work with these texture-packs.
They require a lot of performance/strong system (at least on x86 / Project64 etc.)

Not sure about the OoT Reloaded one but I got all of my texture packs from here.

        https://emulationking.com/category/n64-texturepacks/

I’ve had no problem running them on a pi4. Actually ran all of them on a 3 and 3b+ without issue. So first of all this is all from memory so a lot could be missing but here goes.

There will need to be a folder in /.local/share/cache/mupen64plus/hirestextures or something like that? If not you’ll have to make the folders for it but again if the folders aren’t there you’ll need to do some more research for the correct path. After that you should be able to download the texture packs using the rice format.

Pretty fuzzy on this next part too but I believe I had to run the game using a non-libretro hires emulator to “create” the packs (there is a loading screen when launching saying that it’s loading the hires textures). If you’re ok using a non-libretro emulator that’s all you need to do but if you want to use lr-mupen64plus-next (which you probably do) you’ll need to go into the retroarch menu (hotkey+x) and enable the hires textures there.

It’s definitely doable and a big improvement in my opinion but does take some work. Maybe that’ll get you started in the right direction and if you have other questions maybe I can look at my system at another time.

          Yeah.

I think one needs to create two folders.
          hires_texture
          cache

Haven't really seen a good YouTube video with simple instructions on this though.

I might just start out with something easy, like Mesen for NES.

          https://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/Texture_packs

Zelda and Castlevania remasters look like a real banger.

Could be fun and I love learning something new. :)

            Poopers.

I first tried an NES HD texture pack on my handheld Ayn Odin Pro.

            alt text

It completely tanked the Mesen emulator.

I'm guessing the performance on a Pi 4 would probably be even twice as bad. :(

            Unless I'm missing something here.

              @Addison

I for sure have been running Djilpis texture packs for OoT and Mollymutts for SM64 on pi’s for a while without issues. I did try the OoT reloaded one on a pi4 without luck. Maybe some packs won’t perform well? But all the ones I got to work were from that emulationking site. Off the top of my head I think I used

              Star Fox
              Mario Kart
              Banjo Kazooie
              Sin and Punishment
              OoT
              SM64

There was also a naming convention for the packs where you had to use the “Good Name” I think it was called? Basically Mario Karts pack had to be MARIOKART64 or something like that or it wouldn’t recognize it either.

                Found the trouble on this.

                https://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=31559.0

I needed to download the HD Pack Download for low end CPUs instead of the one I used.

Looks the same but the performance is now perfect. :)

Next is also adding the upgraded audio.

I'm a slow learner, but I'm making my way.

Soon I'll understand the texture packs for N64. :D

Did you ever get it to work? Finally got around to looking and all of my texture packs are in

                  /home/pi/.cache/mupen64plus/cache

                  They’re also all .htc files.

                    @WhiteT982

Haven't made my way yet to N64.

Still trying to settle the texture packs for the NES.

Thanks for the folder directory location though.

It will be easier now that I know where those will go.
