I can't seem to run the retropie setup script because it crashes my system during setup. What can I find out what's going on? My PC ran all night so I don't think it's hardware.

There should be a log file in $HOME/RetroPie-Setup/logs with the installation log, though if your computer crashed, then it may have not been saved. Re-run the installation, but select just the core components and if they're installed ok, then install the emulators you're interested in manually, one by one.

(L)Ubuntu 18.04 is a very old release and it's no longer supported upstream - you should use 22.04 (latest LTS).

@mitu well the reason I used 18.04 is I heard it had less problems with RetroPie

Turns out my CPU was overheating and installing indicator-cpufreq to have it throttle the CPU so it doesn't climb in temperature rapidly solved the problem for me and compilation is now stable.

@mitu probably something I read on Reddit though I've gone through so many links and already reinstalled an OS once today I don't want to bother digging it up. Heard some cores had problems on 22.04 somewhere but like I said, indicator-cpufreq stabilized my system so compilation is happening smoothly now

I'm not aware of any issues with 22.04. There may have been, at the time it was launched, 2 years ago, but there shouldn't be today. Again, 18.04 is not supported upstream and support for it from various emulators is dwindling.
