I installed Retropie 3.3 in Raspberry Pi 2 to play old Pokemon games.

I installed the Gameboy Advance emulator and put some GBA games in the GBA folder via FileZilla through SSH.

After checking that the files are successfully copied, I rebooted and the games were well organized in the folder.

But, Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald would never execute. After the loading screen in the console, it returns back to the game selection screen.

However, other gba roms such as Firered and Leafgreen successfully executed.

In addition, older Pokemon games such as Gameboy and Gameboy Color normally executed.

All of the GBA roms were successfully executed in the Windows emulator NO$GBA.

What is the reason that these GBA files crash??

You might try installing some of the other GBA emulators from the RetroPie-Setup Script menu. After installing other GBA emulators, when you load up a game you can press a button on the controller at the Runcommand to get a menu that you can use to change the emulator (either per-rom or default for all GBA roms).

I'd recommend installing all the GBA emulators starting with lr- because those are the easiest to manage/configure and then test with each until you find one that will work.

I'd update to RetroPie 4.0.2 (4.0.3 is also available if you do a manual update), many improvements have happened since 3.3. That said, I use mGBA as my default emulator and it works very well. gpsp used to be the default GBA emulator and I found that it froze at random times. That was a gpsp issue, not a RetroPie problem.

It's a PiGRRL 2 gameboy project, so I have to use the PiGRRL 2 Retropie image.

Is it okay to upgrade to version 4.0.3?

How can I upgrade to that version??

@dhlee20 I'm not sure if/what drivers are involved, but you could try making another SD card with the image, and update that one and see how things go. I don't know how far you can update without Raspbian Jessie (I think 3.3 was still on Wheezy) but here's a walkthrough on updating from the Wiki.

When I changed the default GBA emulator to mGBA, it finally launched with none of errors!!

              I really appreciate about that!!

Do the controller settings and roms exist when I upgrade to version 4.0 from 3.3?

@dhlee20 That's great! If switching the default emulator fixed the problem, I'm of the mindset "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" so I'd stay with 3.3 if it's working for your needs. All that said, if you update RetroPie your controller settings and ROMs should stay there if you just update right on the Pi. If you reflash your SD card, then you'll lose everything.

Then I'll try to upgrade to version 4.0. The UI and functions have improved a lot comparing to 3.3.
