Retropie crashes when choosing any option
-
Pi Model or other hardware: Raspberrypi CM4 8GB
Power Supply used: 2x 18650
RetroPie Version Used (eg 3.6, 3.8.1, 4.1 - do not write latest):
Built From: Installed on Debian GNU/Linux 11 (bullseye)
Controller used: Clockworkpi uConsole
Guide used: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Debian/Hi guys,
I installed retropie on my uConsole following the instructions found here: Debian/Ubuntu - RetroPie Docs 1
After installation i can launch retropie. I setup the controls. Now when i try to launch anything like games or choose an option in the menu, retropie crashes. The screen exits retropie and comes back to where i first was in retropie.
Anybody got any experience with this issue?

Which version are you using, exactly ? It's shown at the top of RetroPie-Setup, when you're opening the setup script.

Does this mean you're dropped to the command line ? Which image did you use to install - is it RaspiOS or Debian ?

Version 4.8.7

Yes, looks like it dropped to an empty command line for 1 sec
Debian image -

What do you mean for 1 sec ? If EmulationStation crashes (i.e. the front-end used to browse and launch games), then you'd be left at the command line after the crash. Note that RetroPie is not a program by itself, but a collection of scripts to download and configure various programs (emulators, front-ends to browse your games, drivers, etc.).
Can you run the front-end (EmulationStation) from a command line terminal with
emulationstation --debug
reproduce the issue and then post the log messages on pastebin.com ?
Debian image
So you downloaded the Pi4 image from https://raspi.debian.net/tested-images/ ? Are you sure ? We don't support anything besides RaspiOS on the Raspberry Pi, but if the system works and the GPU drivers are working, then it should work.

Not really sure, i followed the guide on the retropie site for Debian. So i thought that this would be teh debian version.

The question is what is your OS exactly, which is the image you used to write to the sdcard/MMC for your CM4 ? The Debian installation page applies to both Debian and Debian derived distributions, inclusing Ubuntu or RaspiOS.

As explained in the installation page you used, we don't support using the desktop on the Pi, the front-end should be started from the terminal, as you have - forcibly - discovered.
