@mitu I think it's more people being inpatient. Since other teams have images already out and no longer in beta

they expect Retropie to be the same
It's just a guess

Is this a troll post ? The 1st (pinned) topic in the category is titled Raspberry Pi 5 - official announcement and has almost 500 posts, with users posting how to install and run RetroPie on it, reporting bugs and suggesting improvements.

I am not inpatient!
I bought a Raspberry Pi5-Starter Kit a couple of months ago and the package is still unopened and waiting for an official retropie-release.
As you @mitu recommend to use the manual setup described by users: does that mean that this official stup might never be released?
Or propably the release of the Raspberry Pi6 will be earlier?
Would be ok to me!, i just disliked the idea to do a manual installation and run into problems that i would not have with an official image ;)

The manual setup is as 'official' as it gets. The image is largely just the manual setup that's run over a pristine RaspiOS image.

Or propably the release of the Raspberry Pi6 will be earlier?

Can't tell, just like with the PI5, I don't know beforehand. I think not.

AFAI dont use any experimental cores it might work from the start, i am pretty excited ;)

Remember that the Pi5 has no out-of-the-box video analog output (i.e. composite). You can get composite through a couple of pins, but I think is video only, no audio.

@mitu i am impressed that you even remember that i am one of those "CRT-guys" :D
I will use regular HDMI-Out in the first step, as i did with the Pi4.
I did not give up the idea of connecting a current Pi to my CRTs, but that is a future project, thinking of a HDMI-Scart-Converter...but i have to collect a lot of information in advance.

@mitu What is the status of Vulkan/Mesa integration? I'm not quite successful with installing those in a workable fashion.

Not merged yet - https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/pull/3785. Though it's nothing spectactular since the usual suspects don't benefit from it on a Pi5:

PPSSPP needs x11 when using Vulkan
Dolphin doesn't work with Vulkan

In this case you don't need anything on the RetroPie side, the Vulkan driver is part of Mesa and it should work on the desktop regardless of RetroPie's Vulkan support for emulators or not.

@mitu I think the most benefits from Vulkan come with Naomi and Naomi 2 games that don't run at full speed with OpenGL.

Yes, Club Kart European Session (Naomi 2) experiences massive frame drops, dropping under 50 fps in busy areas without Vulkan. However, with Vulkan and the 'per strip to fast' setting in lr-flycast, it runs at full speed, maintaining a steady 60 fps.

Similarly, Airline Pilots (NAOMI) experiences improved performance with Vulkan, running at full speed without frame drops.

It seems that lr-flycast-dev benefits greatly from this.

I'm running from within ES'ses carousel (init/matchbox-window-manager). I don't want a desktop installation (so bookworm lite + Retropie).

I'll fully admit I'm a little impatient now
I bought it last year around Nov/Dec and expected to see a RetroPie in 5-6 months....
it feels like it's well over due.
But as long as it works, and I can play some almost perfect System 32 Goodness.

@Jiryn have you tried the manual install?

If you have a spare SD card knocking about I'd give that a go, as it might help you learn a little more about the mechanics of Linux and the file structure process it's built on

Had to take 2-3 semesters of Unix/Linux back as an undergrad...
Granted that was 20yrs ago, but it shouldn't have changed that much.
Not used, or even touched it since getting my degrees (Masters in Netwrok Administration/Engineer), so you may be right about needing a refresh.
(Unless you count modifying the system files through command prompt on older pis)

As for the SD-Card, I have a 1TB on stand by for when the image is release.
I had been thinking of a manual install, just lazy and working on multiple things.

Basically, my PI is so I can play and stream Arcade Games, 32X, and legacy consoles I don't own (The Ataris)

Installing retropie on rpi5 right now. It has been a few years since ive been on here, back when we were all(mostly) using rpi3b+

@Jiryn with that SD card, I'd look into an SSD if you have a cheap one knocking around? Using one of the m.2 adapters (I use the pimoroni base) to attach some simple m.2 SSD storage has been a blessing as it does give a nice speedy boost over SD cards, so that alone is nice to play around with.

And being able to read/write the sram data of games every few seconds rather than every minute for fear of overwriting the SD card is quite nice too
