Wow is it just me and my board or it's the norm?
RETRO took me all night to install.
Running on OrangePI Zero 2W 1GB.
I thought it stuck/froze on CC msg_HASH.C and rebooted several times. Finally i let it go and went to bed. Woke up and it was still running, finalizing. Happy I got it running.

Wanted support from their website but registration never got approved(email).

It's your board. Looks a bit under-powered for a source installation. Binary installation would have taken a LOT less time, but that's only available for Raspberry Pis.

RETRO took me all night to install.

Did you start with a basic installation ? You might have saved some time installing just the core packages and then selectively adding the desired emulators from the main section. Also, are you running the 'mainline' RetroPie or some other fork ?

Running on OrangePI Zero 2W 1GB.

Good to know it works, though we don't have explicit support for this board. What image/OS did you use ?

If you're talking about the OrangePi site, I wouldn't bother.

I did the same, but when I try to start emulationstaion I get a black screen.
In the output I get multiple:
          "DRM_IOCTL_MODE_CREATE_DUMB failed: Cannot allocate memory"

I see that for the raspberry there is an option to increase the memory for the GPU in config.txt but I don't see the same for the orangepi

@ReggiePI Have managed to install under Ubuntu on my Opi Zero 2w(4gb) model.
Took a while but so far does run, and connects seemlessly with my bluetooth ps3 compatible controller too

Last month I finally was able to install Retropie on my OrangepiZero2W 1GB.
I downloaded and installed Ubuntu server with the 6.1 Kernal.
I also had to install OpenBox.
              Then I installed Retropie.

It took all night for me also.

I've been testing it. So far Atari 5200/7800/Lynx. Neo-Geo, SNES, SEGA all work well. Except for N64. Runs very slow and choppy (unplayable ).

@gpcopy I have tried the same, using the headless ubuntu server image but i can't seem to get a hdmi output. did you have to do anything special to enable display out or did you use a desktop image?

                  @julza I started from a desktop ubuntu.

HDMI video worked happily, but do have sound issues. One TV works with video but no sound, the other works fine - although the second is technically a monitor - so far not had time to investigate.

                    @julza installed on Opi Zero 2W, 1G
Ubuntu server image that I added xfce. To successfully install RetroPie had to add a swapfile. Without it, the install crashed and rebooted the Opi.

                    To create a 1G swapfile

                    sudo fallocate -l 1G /swapfile
                    sudo chmod 600 /swapfile
                    sudo mkswap /swapfile

After this, can proceed to install RetroPie. Since I wouldn't use a swap after install I didn't bothered to add the swap to fstab

                      Orange Pi zero 2w 4gb

                      Easy installation process.

                      • Install Armbian Ubuntu Gnome image (no sound)
                      • Turn on GPU in Armbian-config
                      • Update/Upgrade
                      • Overwrite zero2w.dtb file, downloaded from post 44, made by totof, to enable HDMI sound
                      • Install RetroPie (few hours for basic install)

                      Enjoy!

Cannot use the Bluetooth and RetroPie-setup menu in Armbian, any input and it crashes while trying to navigate. If you preset Bluetooth connections within the OS, it runs all games and controls really well.

                        PSX, all runs well
N64, mid range games run well.
Dreamcast, lower end games run well.

Sadly not perfect yet due to Bluetooth imperfections in the menu and need N64 resolution manual preset when swapping to different quality monitor... Just that :(

Managed to install RetroPie successfully on Dietpi OS.
