The Pi5 is not officially supported, so this isn't intended to distract the RetroPie developers, rather to see if the community is experiencing a similar issue with a fresh, manual installation of RetroPie on Pi5 hardware.

Specific Symptom: (New manual build). Any video playing in EmulationStation renders fine, but there is a 1-2 second delay when stopping any video. This is new behavior. This includes video snaps and screensaver videos. This makes navigating games tedious. Also, if sound is playing when stopping, it "hangs" annoyingly for the duration.

    Required Details:

    • Pi Model or other hardware: Pi 5
    • Power Supply used: Argon PWR Gan USB-C PD 27W
    • RetroPie Version Used: 4.8.8 (18c2b430)
    • Built From: Manual RetroPie Installation instructions (Bookworm Lite)
    • USB Devices connected: Keyboard, Gamepad
    • Controller used: Sony DualShock 4
    • Guide used: Manual RetroPie Installation instructions (Bookworm Lite)
    • Issue occurs with either ES or ES-dev, and I don't suspect the problem is here

    Additional Details:
I have manually installed RetroPie multiple times in the past on a Pi 5 with official case and MicroSD without issue. Here are the unique differences with this specific build:

    • Case: Argon v3 NVME
    • Storage: 1TB NVME (no MicroSD)
    • OS firmware: Linux ssd 6.6.47+rpt-rpi-v8 #1 SMP PREEMPT Debian 1:6.6.47-1+rpt1 (2024-09-02) aarch64 GNU/Linux

    Speculation:
Suspect something changed with either libvlc-dev or libvlccore-dev vlc but not certain. Odd that it's only the videos that hang longer than on my previous systems/builds.

Wondering if anybody has recently, manually installed RetroPie for the Pi5 and is seeing this issue. Also, any suggestions on how to troubleshoot would be helpful.

    Cheers,
    -ros

Yes it has something to deal with that version of VLC.
      So a downgrade is needed

      RPi3B+ / 200GB/ RetroPie v4.5.14, RPi4 Model B 4gb / 256gb / RetroPie 4.8.2
      RPi5 4gb / 512gb / RetroPie 4.8.9 -Basic
      Maintainer of RetroPie-Extra .
