@tar so was thinking maybe i could just do a fresh install reformate the sd card and start over... if i do this is there anyway i wouldnt have to do the controllers and the screen turning and daphne setups again. i rember it took me weeks of reading with little understanding.

@tar You can configure the sound system to work like before the update by modifying /boot/cmdline.txt and adding at the end

        snd-bcm2835.enable_compat_alsa=1
i tried this to no avail.
ive also changed every audio setting i can find in retroarch and retropie. getting them all to hdmi output. nothing seems to work. ive read almost all thewposts tagged audio getting a good headache lol
THIS WILL TEACH ME TO UPDATE AFTER 4 YEARS

Which arcade emulator lost sound ? You've not mentioned which game/emulator have you used. What did you change before you lost sound ?

Try renaming (or removing) the retroarch.cfg file from /opt/retropie/configs/arcade and then re-install lr-mame again to create the default RetroPie configuration for it.

You may have a config override that's setting the sound wrong. Try to provide a verbose log, as explained here and post the resulting log (from /dev/shm/runcommand.log) on pastebin.com.

Yes, the log is correct, but there are no audio related errors in it. It's not the RetroArch config that's causing the lack of audio.

If you have created any audio configuration files while troubleshooting the issue, I advise you to remove then, then go in RetroPie's Audio Settings entry and set the audio to HDMI/Headphones (whatever fits your setup). Check - in the same menu - the audio volume and make sure the audio output is not muted, then retry to see if you still have an issue.
