Overclocking Question about GPU_Freq and Core_Freq
-
Hi Everyone. I'm hoping to get a definitive answer here because I have not been able to find a satisfactory answer online. Ok so basically I'm trying to determine if the gpu_freq=500 option I've configured in my config.txt file is having an effect or simply being ignored by the firmware. I have read online from some sources that it does take effect and others say that "force_turbo=1" needs to be enabled or this option is ignored. I do not want to force turbo at all so I want the first option to be true. Forcing turbo disables the dynamic clock driver and as a result the system will run needlessly hot. In my config file I have the settings arranged as such
core_freq=500
gpu_freq=500I did this to make sure all the bases are covered so to speak, however now that I have active cooling I am thinking about increasing these values to 600 MHz to gain a 20% boost in GPU heavy emulators. I'm hoping that the statement regarding the gpu_freq value being ignored unless force_turbo is enabled is a relic of an ancient firmware and has since been rectified. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Hi all. To make my question crystal clear, basically I'm looking to know the following.
Do you benefit at all from setting "gpu_freq=500"? Does it set the frequencies for the various GPU blocks to 500 MHz without "force_turbo=1" enabled?
I'm hoping it does because being forced to disable the dynamic clock driver to do this seems like an unfortunate design oversight for a hobbyist circuit board. It's bugging me so much I think I'm going to be trying to determine the answer with my test bed Pi3 tonight. Hoping someone out there has an answer for me though. The way the documentation is written seems to indicate that "gpu_freq=500" might work, but setting the individual blocks (such as v3d_freq=500) doesn't, or that's one way to interpret it anyway, its not 100% clear about that. But in the worst case scenario, if the 3d block is locked at 250 MHz, it will probably stay that way as I really don't like the idea of disabling dynamic clocks lol.
