Streets of Rage Remake (SoRR) - How to SAVE, and any OpenBOR info?
-
For an update for OpenBOR, I've spent a couple hours on several different versions of OpenBOR games, and trying to get them to work on the Pi. I can get to the below loaded screen, but no further (it exits out when I press "A" on whatever version I'm trying to load):
I have a post on the OpenBOR forum as well, but nobody there so far seems to know. I also tried the LavaLit website and that's down, and SenileTeam says they don't support OpenBOR anymore (both those were referenced in the screenshot)...so really, it seems to be a big mystery who would know how this works.
If this doesn't work, why would this even be added to the Experimental menu if it doesn't work on any setup, or any version of OpenBor game? (I understand "experimental" usually means buggy and it crashes alot, but so far they've all worked to some extent at least...).

@Dochartaigh
I think the problem is that the fork of OpenBOR that is installed is really out dated:
https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3871/openbor-worksI've heard if you can find older versions of the game PAKs, that they would work but I haven't really tried this. Some say these older versions are hard to find. I think I also read somewhere that BuZz worked on the code a bit once and got it to run but wasn't stable enough to add to the RetroPie menu and he's been too busy to look at it any more.

That's good advice. Thanks. I'll see what I can find - maybe there's a compatibility table out there with which version of OpenBor works with which versions of the game .PAKs. (hope it's easier than finding the OpenBOR games I found the other night....SO MUCH spam, pop-up windows you can't close, fake spyware link sites....really bad).

SORR saves your game automatically, after you beat a level. Just try rebooting you RPI after the first boss fight, and you'll continue from where you took off.
However, if you lose all lives and get a Game Over, your save game will be automatically deleted. That's how SORR works.

I just tried three OpenBOR versions that are from 2010/2011ish...that's pretty darn old! None work. I think it's just not possible until somebody compiles a newer source (and even then, the people are OpenBOR tell me it's kinda like MAME - an exact OpenBOR executable is needed for an exact OpenBOR port somebody programmed - nothing seems to be universal and they change all the time).

Thanks, I thought the first big boss with the knife was the end of level one (where right after that the scene changes to inside a bar or something like that)....but it seems like there's maybe 2 "big bosses" after him THEN you're finished with "Stage 1". This totally threw me off and was why the game wasn't saving because I never really beat the first level.
Still a shame you can't save/load at will. I'm going to start copying the save data every level I advance (because I was doing GREAT with extra lives up to level 3...then died like 5 times at the big boss which messed everything up!).

OpenBOR update HERE (I got it working - VERY old versions at least ;)

@Dochartaigh Is this the forum you're posting on?

Looks like OpenBOR is still getting semi-active development. Looks like the games have to be changed from OpenGL mode to SDL mode and then you can launch them.

@enderandrew that's interesting! Have you had a chance to try this?
So basically they said to try this:
- try deleting the existing .CFG files for a game and run it again so you get default settings
the .CFG file can be found in the Saves folder with the same name as the game (example: NAMEOFGAME.CFG)
If that doesn't work then try this:
- load up the .PAK in OpenBOR on the PC
- change the video options so it uses SDL mode
- exit OpenBOR from the menu so these changes are saved
- then copy the new config file to your Raspberry Pi
I haven't tried this yet and I didn't even know there were .cfg files
If that doesn't work:
- try deleting the existing .CFG files for a game and run it again so you get default settings

I don't have a RetroPi to test on yet. I'm waiting for the spring to build mine to see if there is a Pi 4 or newer model in the spring. The past two years there has been a new Pi model released in February.

Oh yeah I think I remember reading that from one of your earlier posts.

I kind of did the same thing right before the Raspberry Pi 3 came out and now I think I should have just bought the current RPi 2 at the time. I actually just got my 2nd RPi 3 that I'm thinking of using for a NAS or for Video Surveillance.
After owning one and waiting, my advise would be to just go ahead and get a RPi 3 now and then get the 4 when it comes out. You can do other projects with them besides RetroPie and they make great gifts for your friends and relatives!

Yes, that's the forum I posted on. Here's my post.

I don't have a PC to test on unfortunately (well, I do, kinda but I don't feed like formatting a USB stick, putting my Windows bootcamp image on it, and booting up my Mac in Windows anytime soon ;(
But the biggest problem the guys at Chronocrash told me is the files (besides the config and .PAK data file the fix you posted deals with) - like the actually .exe file (for lack of a better word) are built on an extremely old OpenBOR engine - so NONE of the new (or even years old it sounds like) .PAK's will run on it (if I understood them correctly). If it was newer I would definitely go through the trouble of trying this fix out on a PC but I'm pretty sure the base engine it's WAY too old to run any of their cooler new games (and the ones I'm playing in DOS from around 2004 are pretty limited to be honest...not enjoying them much).
I believe BuZz, one of the moderators here, is working on a recent OpenBOR build for the Pi but still has some kinks to work out.
