So, I've been trying to get Donkey Kong (mame) working on my raspberry pi3 with retropie 4.1.

After following a lot of leads and figuring out how to get a proper romset (.078) for my emulator (I'm settling on lr-mame2003 based on reports, and will go with fbalpha for outliers like CPS3 stuff), I still kept having problems with sound in Donkey Kong.

Links I kept finding were telling me to place the samples folder in the same directory as my dkong rom, and that ended up not being the case for me. After a lot of futzing around (and thankfully, as a result, learning quite a lot) I came to the discovery that the "samples" folder at the bios level is the correct spot. I believe it's /home/retropie/bios/mame2003/samples.

So, after putting all the sample zip files HERE, sound in Donkey Kong worked for me.

I hope this is helpful for someone.

@BuZz excellent link. Thanks a lot. I obviously hadn't come across that yet.

@RandoCalrisian The wiki should be considered the official documentation - so if using an emulator it's worth checking the wiki page for it.
