Question about Ubuntu config
-
Hi there, I've installed into Ubuntu, so I know this is slightly off track, any idea how to call up the mame configuration screen like I can on the Pi once in a game? The tab button doesn't do anything, so I can't configure controls:(
-
Ok, I'm fully aware this isn't an Ubuntu forum, and that I've done the metaphorical equivalent of just saying "It's a red one", and that this could be considered a bump, so I'll just give a little (some?!) more info and leave it at that.
I followed the instructions here, https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/RetroPie-Ubuntu-16.04-LTS-x86-Flavor and all works a treat, I'm using 16.04lts, Retropie works perfectly, all roms behave the same, most impressed. I'm using a PS4 controller, plugged in via usb, it works and responds fine with other games just as if it's the Pi, it even responds to Mame games, but only one button, the coin insert (L2) so I look rich but that's about it!
I've downloaded other Mame packages to see if I could get to the config that way, but of course the romset doesn't change so I don't get the option to change the emulator for that or any game. I've tried plugging in wired and wireless keyboards, to see if the tab button is mapped wrong, systematically going through each button and combinations of buttons, and finally mashing randomly. I dragged my retroarch.cfg file from the Pi into /opt/retropie/configs/mame-mame4all to see if settings would work from there. No change.
I love Retropie, having it fully on the laptop would be a bonus, but not the end of the world if I can't!Am I missing something (ha, even I could bite at that one) basic, or is there some different method for using Ubuntu? I know it's early days and the Pi is the way to go, this is just for flash and flair.

@Fruitybit really this has nothing to do with ubuntu but really is to do with mame, but your topic title or tags do not mention it, and you do not tell us the version of mame you're using or anything else asked for in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first

My apologies for lack of etiquette, being a non- Pie related issue I wasn't sure how to approach it, having searched here and Ubuntu forums and not finding anything similar. In my haste to put as much info as possible in my last post I blatently forgot some details:(
Mame is mame4all, and I get that this isn't fully a Retropie issue, I just wasn't sure where to turn. Again, apologies for omitting this.
As above, Ubuntu 16.04 and installed as in the instructions (the link above) with PS4 controller via USB.
Apart from the additional mame info, I'm not sure what else I can give to clarify the issue, please let me know if I'm being obtuse.
Please accept my apologies for my rudeness, I'm acutely aware you folks are doing an incredible job without having noobs like me spoiling your day. This is the first time I've had to put tags to detail an issue, so not being sure what the issue was I tried to keep them short and sweet. I'll try to be more considered in the future.
However, thank you for replying, I appreciate that you are trying to help! No doubt it will come down to me being relatively new to this, I'm not afraid to say how inept I feel, let alone how ineptly I act.

@Fruitybit that's ok! but it is a pie-relate issue. you're running retropie!
mame4all is in two flavours. lr-imame4all and mame4all. i assume you're using the latter. in which case tab SHOULD work, but you might want to use for the former as its default controls should be correct.
or, better yet, not use mame4all at all. you should be using lr-mame2003 IMO. maybe advmame.
-
@dankcushions Just a quick thanks- you were spot on;))
-
@Fruitybit Just in case this helps anyone in the same situation, I found in lr-mame2003 that the default combination L1,R1,left trigger, right trigger all pressed together opens the configure menu.
-
@Fruitybit with default config R2 (right trigger) is enough.

@meleu Ha ha!! Thank you, I'll get my coat...;)
