Remap Controls in Atari800 emulator?

I realize that due to the fact the Atari800 emulator isn't ported in LibRetro, that it's probably not a supported topic to discuss here. But since it IS available as an experimental package, here's hoping somebody can shed some needed light.
Is it at all possible to remap the controls in the Atari800 emulator to something other than a keyboard key? I can't figure out how. In the emulator's settings menus, you can go into the controller settings and remap them to other keys, but apparently there is no way to actually map them to a physical controller. This is absurd, and I've gotta be overlooking something somewhere. Why would the author(s) write an emulator without the ability to use a an actual joystick? Is there maybe some extra flag or something I have to add to the launch command, or maybe some hidden setting in the ini/cfg for the emulator that enables using external devices?
This is nuts! Can somebody please help? :)

Apparently you CAN use a joystick if it's connected to an LPT port. You have to specify though to use-joy0 <dev/lp0>in the command line to do that. So take it one step further, could we just use-joy0 <dev/usb##>instead? Or is that just wishful thinking?Something else.. we use Joy2Key for mapping joysticks inside the RetroPie-Setup scripts right? Is it possible to launch this with the emulator too? How can I go about testing that?

@hansolo77 joymap works with this emulator. I dont know how to use it but i have a mapping that someone made that allows me to use an intellivision, coleco, or atari 5200 controller with their keypads on it.

Yeah, I don't know how to set things up other than the automatic way. I figure somebody will chime in and say using the xboxdrv would work too. But without knowing how to actually set it up, I'm just kinda hopeless. I also don't want to go and set it up to always use an actual joystick, as I really only plan on using a joystick when I play with my brother. My personal use controller is the Xbox360 one. So I don't want to do something that would cause a hardcode dedication to just a joystick.
