First Install-Newbie

Forgive me I am a newbie trying to install “version 4.1 of RetroPI”
I am using Wi-Fi
Raspberry Pi model 3
SD Card, USB flash drive
Instructions used were from the video provided by “TechTipsta”
Pi is put together great, install was going fine until the last few steps. “Emulation Station” works good. My Controller (XBOX controller) works with no issues.
I used my new flash drive (thumb drive) and ensured it was empty-created a retropie folder just like the instructions stated. Plugged it into my pi to get the folders needed and that worked fine. When I plugged the drive back into my laptop I had BIOS, configs and ROMS. So my thought is ok now time to move the games into the ROMS on my thumb drive to be loaded on to the PIE just like the instructions stated.... So I searched the internet, watched YouTube, re-read the instructions and somewhere somehow I missed the step about the ROMS. I searched the forum looking for answers; I read the piece on github.com. I read the portion on scraping games and ROMs and still cannot figure it out. I also tried the Steven Selph's Scrapper and got nothing. When I try the built in Scraper on the PIE it comes with no games.Again I apologize if this has been asked or is in the wrong section-just looking for some reliable help, anyone to point me in the right direction. I know I cannot ask where things can be downloaded but any guidance is appreciated

@jeremypreemo the "Scraper" is a little confusing at first I thought the same thing that it was for ROMs but it's for meta-information about ROMs (game thumbnails, descriptions, release date, etc).

ROMs are usually placed in ~/RetroPie/roms/system (where system is the machine to use i.e. mastersystem)
(On my system I just transfer by USB stick using the file manager under the Retropie system, but it seems to require a reboot for new ROMs to show)

@johne79 All good advice. But I think OP is confused as to where actual ROMs are obtained...

@jeremypreemo use your favourite search engine to search for terms like roms download games etc. There are plenty of places to get them, some better than others. Unfortunately no-one is able to post links or even tell you the name of the sites due to the legal aspect of downloading copyrighted material.

Did you make sure that Emulation station was running when you plugged the usb in? Did you wait around 1min before removing it? i.e.when it stops blinking.

What do you mean by this? Once you return the usb stick to the pc, the roms are automatically transferred. Did you transfer roms? Now you don't say which roms or which system so I am guessing. But I do have a guess - the tutorial from the wiki is for retropie 3.8 - not all the emulators are installed by default like before in the latest version, you must install them. There is an easier way to transfer roms. If you are using windows, you can browse to the folders and add via your network. Just go to File Explorer and type
\\RETROPIEand the folders will appear so that you can browse to them. It works great. See these Tutorials for more information....

@rbaker when I installed the usb initially into my laptop it was empty and so I created a folder and named it RetroPie. I then took at the usb and placed it in my Pie and it blinked for a few seconds and then went blinked for 30 secs or so. I then took it out my Pie and placed it back in my laptop and double clicked the RetroPie folder and saw Bios, Configs and ROMs. That is where I am stuck. The next step in the instructions was to then move the games into the corresponding ROM's -so games move from my laptop to the thumb drive into the appropriate ROM. But I have no games to move into the ROMs that is the problem I am having.
Within the ROMS I have the emulators i.e NES Atari etc.. -
@jeremypreemo the ROMs are the games. You'll need to get them or else you'll have nothing to play on your emulators. We can't and won't discuss these here due to copyright and also the forum rules.

You can always play Ur-Quan Masters.
It's a port and doesn't need a ROM, and you can make the computer have a team of nothing but Spathi, then you can annihilate them all with a team of Chenjesu. It's great stress relief. :-P
There's also Prince of Persia and OpenTyrian. :D
Don't be asking for ROMs here though, it's against the forum rules, and not very nice to the game developers who spent loads of time and energy making these games to support their families.

No. Rom goes into the corresponding rom folder for the emulator you choose.

No. You have a folder structure (named roms) where you can place roms for the different emulators, some of which need installing according to my previous post.
My suggestion is to read the instructions very carefully as linked below. If you had done this, you would know all this. You watched the tutorial video right? It clearly shows a rom file being dragged from the desktop to the usb stick. I don't get what you missed there.

I read the instructions and I followed the video tutorial but was under the impression that the games would be there automatically. I was wrong my bad. thanks to the posters their help was very instrumental in getting me the info I needed. sorry for posting @rbaker -
