I have been having issues with the audio on my SNES roms dropping out every 5-10 seconds. Seems to be a consistent issue with all my SNES roms and a couple of my N64 and Megadrive roms. I have changed my default emulator from lr-snes9x2010 to PiSNES as I've seen suggested with no luck improving the audio. I have also gone through the audio menu in the retropie setup menu and selected HDMI which also did not fix the issue. I have forced HDMI in boot/config.txt and also updated retroarch.cfg with audio_out_rate = 44100 but no luck. Those are the primary suggestions I have come across really to fix the issue. Has anyone else had similar issues and had success fixing them? And are there other options I can change that may help?

Is your HDMI output from the Pi going directly to your TV or is it passing through an AV receiver? Are you seeing any frame stutter when this happens?

@batesman Thanks for the response. HDMI is going straight from the Pi to the TV, however the audio then gets rooted through my surround sound system. I turned off the surround sound and turned on my TV speakers and the audio worked. There isn't any frame stutter that I have seen. The game keeps playing normally. It's just the audio that drops out. I've tried different roms of the same game which also didn't fix anything.

Is there anyway to get it to work through the surround sound?

Well, I think that tells us that either your TV is the culprit or the surround sound system is. What if you go directly from the Pi to the surround sound and then out to the TV? Does the issue persist? Is it present at the surround sound system, the TV or both?

@batesman I sent the Pi directly through the surround sound and the issue was there. When I go directly to the TV without surround sound the audio works fine. So it seems to be something to do with the surround sound. I'd like to get the audio working with the surround sound but at least the audio works with the TV speakers. Unfortunately, I have a vizio 5.1 sound bar system that doesn't have a lot of options I can tinker with to maybe fix it. So unless there is something I can do on the Pi I may be out of luck.

Well, I'm not certain what your options are on the Pi for manipulating the audio output so that the soundbar doesn't skip. Does the soundbar have an option for different sound modes you could try? Maybe the choppiness is due to some post processing of the signal at the bar?
