Arcade control issues with n64 and snes

My first post here goes,I have an arcade table 2 controllers with 8 buttons for each One i played mario kart 64 on Saturday as 2 player with my son it played excellent no problems now I try and play and controllers are not working? If anyone could help that would be great thanks,It was all set up for me so my education starts here.(mame is working fine so my controllers are working)also none of n64 or snes games work with it either

@mercifulhacker my friend who built it for me he's away on holiday so I'm stuck,is there a way of changing controls for those emulators or is it from sd card? All I tried was to change controls in emulation station but don't think that did anything,as I said I'm a complete virgin here! Just after any advice

Can you navigate the main menu? (the one with the video game systems and games on it)
And if so, can you hit the "start" button and configure the controls?
Sorry @jjtribute , but you'll have to meet me halfway. Anything more complicated that the above advice will require some work on your part. Read the documentation I linked. It might take a few hours, but it will help you learn what's wrong and where the problem might be.

@mercifulhacker yes I can navigate menu and select the games but once game has loaded nothing works to allow me to get into controls I understand what your saying I'll have a good read and thanks for the replies I'm sure I'll get there eventually!!
