I had something similar happen and it was resolved per this post: https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/4321/runcommand-blinking-cursor-no-launch-menu/43

      To Paraphrase:

"try adding plymouth.enable=0 to the cmdline.txt"

The file is in the /boot directory. I had to add this to get runcommand back after an upgrade a month or two back.

@GinJa You can try removing it to see if it makes a difference. They must have added it into one of the updates.

There is also the Runcommand configuration in the runcommand configuration option in the RetroPie area of Emulation Station. I suppose it's possible it is disabled in there for some reason.

Already checked that and the option is enabled. Reminder it trys to load the rom, I get 2 single pixel colored lines then blank screen. All other emulators work. I have not made any runcommand changes to n64.

is there a way to restore defaults? Could adding the PS3 controller mess up the inputs?

It's possible that a controller would affect inputs, but that would generally mean you have no buttons within an emulator.

At this point I would probably try and dig up another microSD and put a fresh image on it to see if it would do the same thing. I hate starting new though because I personally have a lot of game saves and tweaked configs I would have to back up or recreate. The last time I went with a clean setup, I lost my good customer crt-pi shader file.

Hopefully someone else might have a better idea to spare you from that.

Wow you have game saves. All I do is try to fix issues on this damn thing. Game play is like 10%.

@GinJa The last time I broke everything, I lost a good 20 hrs back into Gran Turismo on Playstation (after finding my original PSX memory car with a 1000+ hr save file had been destroyed).

Now if I had to reformat, I would have to deal with multiple save states a my son and I use them so we can play the same games.

I'm still more mad about my cr-pi shader config file because I had it perfect for curved and regular on a 720p TV. I finally got another decent one for non-curved and kinda stopped at that point to play more games.

To be fair, I have a TON of games on the Pi and mostly Play Devil's Crush Pinball or Multiplayer Bomberman 93.

                      Thoughts on Lakka?

@GinJa Never tried Lakka. It's probably worth a try to see what it's like. I'm kind of stuck in Retropie land because I have invested significant time in learning configs and it's Debian based which is the Linux distribution I have the most experience with.

removing the last line from the txt file worked. But now I see login for retropie just before the game starts.

At one point, my Retropie setup did that as well. I can't remember if it still does, but that never really bugged me enough to look into it.

@mrbwa1 now I see retropie login and runcommand does not work. Think it might be time to switch to recalbox. No dreamcast but at least I will be playing more than investigating and being frustrated. 90% configuration = no fun.

wanted to add that when I launch the file-manager I am taken to the boot up screen with all the green ok's.
