Pi Model or other hardware: 3B
      Power Supply used: 2.5 amp
RetroPie Version Used (3.6, 3.8.1, 4.01 etc.. - do not write latest): 4.1 + updates
      Built From: RetroPie Image
USB Devices connected: Wireless keyboard, Tenda W311MI
Controller used: 8 bitdo FC30 Pro
      Error messages received:
Log found in /dev/shm/runcommand.log (if relevant):
      Guide used: https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/splashscreen

I'm not 100% clear how to setup splashscreens the way I want based on the wiki info. What I want is for a random splash screen to appear each time a splashscreen would be displayed. I've downloaded the splashscreen updates and extras and I'm now trying to set things up via the script.

Do I have to update the splashscreen.list each with each picture? (That's going to be a huge effort).
Do splash videos need to be in a separate folder under /home/pi/retropie/retropie-extra?
If I choose a splash screen does that set it as default and overrule the randomizer?

@batesman in the retropie menu and go to splashscreens. There is an option in there to randomize. You imght have to have retropie 4.0 or newer.

Yes sir! I've enabled that. What I'm wondering is that if I don't update the splashscreen.list file, from where will it randomize? The tool is aware of both directories containing the images files.
          /home/pi/retropie/splashscreens/retropie-extra/ and /opt/retropie/supplementary/splashscreen

I think I may have this figured out. When you enable the randomizer it gives 4 choices.

          1. Randomize Retropie splashscreens
          2. Randomize own splashscreeens from (/home/pi/retropie/splashscreens/retropie-extra/ )
          3. Randomize all splashscreens
          4. Randomize /etc/splashscreens.list

If this is working as I think it is, then:
Choice 1: randomizes from /opt/retropie/supplementary/splashscreen directory,
Choice 2: randomizes from the ./retropie-extra directory
          Choice 3:randomizes from both directories
Choice 4: only uses the list file

What the heck is the list file for though? I don't understand its purpose.

@batesman the list file is if you want a custom set of choices. You can manually specify which images you want it pull instead of the whole folder
