i wonder why it doesn't work

It's one of my favorite fighters and it is disappointing that it doesn't run, but just as @obsidianspider noted above, the current line of Raspberry Pis are just not powerful enough.

Hopefully newer Raspberry Pi's will come out to run some critical arcade games like Mortal Kombat 2/3/UMK3 and Killer Instinct. My arcade machine was built thinking these would be available to run but they are not.

RetroPie can run on Ubuntu, so if you're building an arcade cabinet you could always put a PC or a NUC in there. Space is less of an issue with a cabinet than say, a console, or a handheld.

fba won't run killer instinct on arm, that's not a speed issue : the midway driver (which include KIs and MKs) is a dynarec written for x86_64 only. I also have some doubts about mame support for those games on arm, since part of mame's code is x86 only. I would recommend an udoo x86 if you want a cheap x86_64 board.

it loads and runs in advmame on arm (pi) but it's so slow that there's no point. i'm not sure if advmame team modified the driver to get that working.

Not surprising, that's why fba devs made the choice of writing a dynarec instead of a classic interpreter.

i have mk2 and umk3 running fine using lr-mame2003. umk3 has a graphical bug on the tier select screen, but thats it. it never shows up again. both run at full speed. mk3 on the other hand runs at about 5 fps, but who needs it if umk3 works?

edit: correction, i just ran umk3 a few times to check, and the tier select graphics bug is gone. not sure if thats due to running it from emulation station instead of attract mode (shouldnt make a difference) but everything runs and looks great.

Mame2003 does a good job at running MK2 and MK3, but the speed is not accurate to the original, it is just a little slower on Mame2003. lr-mame4all seems to have better speed/smoothness, but terrible sound. Mame2003 has decent sound, but eventually it will corrupt after 15min of play.

@thebizzness the graphics bug in umk3 I found is not running the right version of the rom. When I Ran the mame 2010 version of mk3/umk3 I would get that. Make sure you have a mame 2003 rom set.

@lostless lr-mame2010 runs umk3 really sloooow. Runs good on lr-mame2003.

any mame after 0.78 had the DCS sound hack removed which why its slow on the 2010 but if you disable the sound, it runs damn near perfect. only hope of running the KI's is if someone can port Ultra 64 emu which isn't perfect but the method used would be a lot more playable. They ported that emu to the old Xbox which runs KI 1 great but KI 2 they had to some mods due to the limits of the Xbox. if this was ported to the PI, it should run both games easily over the old Xbox.

@prican25 ultra 64 used direct x so not really portable i guess.

I doubt that because from what I remember back when a lot emulators were being released on the xbox, they used the linux sources and some ports used SDLX.
