Enhancement: Edit Metadata GUI screen - scroll through games with right & left
-
(searched a lot for this, but didn't find anything - apologies if this is a duplicate suggestion)
I've been going through my ROMs, merrily editing metadata to get stuff the way I'd like it, scraping stuff that hadn't been picked up and so on. However, when working through a big list, it can be kind of annoying to save, close the screen, then go to the next ROM, click select to get into options, then go into edit metadata.
On the "Edit Metadata screen", it sure would be handy if I could use my d-pad to push left to go back one in the ROM list, and right on the d-pad to go down one on the ROM list. So when I'm done editing metadata for say, Boxxle, I save it and then push right to scroll to Boxxle II rather then going back out to get to the ROM list and doing it as I do now.
Bonus points if it prompts me to save with the little "Save Changes?" box if I accidentally try to switch ROMS with dirty/unsaved metadata.
Is that clear? Do I need to do mockups?

@Devster: I can't speak to any of that, but have you tried just editing the gamelist.xml directly in a text editor? You can't use it to scrape roms, but you can use it to change any of the info.

@mattrixk Yeah, and it's not like I have been making a huge TON of edits. Mostly tidying up some of the descriptive text errors and such. I could probably be more efficient. :)
But it seemed like if one can switch systems when viewing a game list with Right/Left on the D-Pad, maybe this would be similarly easy to add when on the edit metadata screen.
With so many different forks for ES, I wasn't quite sure where to post it, so I tried here.

@Devster It's a good idea. Maybe something @fieldofcows can look at when he's working on the Filter and Metadata stuff after he's finished up on White Screen of Death fix.
I want the ability to go up from the top and down from the bottom so it loops around in menus (eg: If you are at the top of the menu, you can press Up to get to the bottom of the menu, and vice versa). I was told that it could mess up the controller configuration though.
-
@mattrixk Doesn't the ability to scroll through game lists like that already exist?
As for editor enhancements, if @fieldofcows implements the metadata changes he's proposing (and certainly if it goes as far as the design I proposed), it will involve a redesign for any/all scrapers out there. Feature requests like this can get added to the list, I suppose...

@MWGemini I was talking about within the "Start" and "Select" menus (not the basic gameslist). You can only go down from the top and it stops once you reach the bottom. I would like it to loop back to the top if you are at the bottom and hit Down (and loop to the bottom when you are at the top and press Up).
I found what Zigurana said about it when I brought it up a few months ago.

@mattrixk His explanation makes sense, but it's definitely something that can be fixed/worked around :).

funny that i came to retropie forum to post the same thing, lemme explain what i am going through
i have just switched from ES to AM for these reasons...
- easy to filter game by number of players or catagory (a win for me)
- custom favorite sub menus ( games to play with wife and kid menue and another to play with friends for example)
- easier to theme game display (getting the number of players and game description on screen is satisfying)
with that, i noticed that scraping usually a pain for these type of info (i believe the box art and video preview is easier to find at the moment)
my problem is i have not find a single rom manager to easy manage different type of system roms (on PC) that can pull info from the internet direct and save them directly to gamelist and romlist directly
i use to have the same problem years ago with my movie collection, till i found this app,
https://www.mediacentermaster.com/if anyone has a suggestion or willing to work on this, it will make alot of gamers happy
