@a7mag3ddon sounds like you used some unofficial image. You could test on another sdcard for example.

no sorry, i dont believe in using other peoples images. i got the vannila 4.1 from the download section and built it myself, especially as i already have a full tosec and no intro sets on the PC.

i have a backup of my card from 2 days ago, i will remove the dirs using the script you asked me to use and re copy just the emulator back and see if the yellow screen of death dissapears, i will also check before to see if those extra lines of code are in the config first.

the image i used is > retropie-4.1-rpi2_rpi3.img file date 5/11/2016

This is the psx confing doesnt seem to be any extra content but i still have 1 blank entry on the list of available emulators.

            lr-pcsx-rearmed = "/opt/retropie/emulators/retroarch/bin/retroarch -L /opt/retropie/libretrocores/lr-pcsx-rearmed/libretro.so --config /opt/retropie/configs/psx/retroarch.cfg %ROM%"
            pcsx-rearmed = "pushd /opt/retropie/emulators/pcsx-rearmed; /opt/retropie/emulators/pcsx-rearmed/pcsx -cdfile %ROM%; popd"

Well something is completely knackered now, even though i have removed psxrearmed using retropie menu, my choose default emulator screen not only has the blank line on number 1, but still shows options 2 and 3 as well.

@a7mag3ddon zip your configs up and I'll take a look.

Its ok, i fixed the extra line thing by reinstalling the emulator from the menu, then copying over my backup config folder, still getting the yellow screen of death

Im going to install a fresh retropie using the image i started with from the downloads section and see what happens, if thats ok then i will put my backup image on from yesterday see if the emulator works (looking for the wrong bios folder) then update from binary, reason being because i originally this afternoon accidentally updated from source before you said to do binary install and that may have broken something ?

other than the time it takes to reflash my back up its an easy test.

Ok were getting somewhere, fresh install of RP then updating update script, then installing psc-rearmed works AND its finding the bios file, albeit just the SCPH1001.BIN one.

Now to re do my big backup and do the same now.

So lets say i get to a point where the old emu was installed, its looking in the wrong place for the bios etc etc etc... whats THE best way to unistall it before updating the script and updating the emulator from binary?
                      .

@a7mag3ddon the removal lines I put above.

I have just tested a fresh install of pcsx-rearmed and all is fine. Must be something else on your system - note I never changed anything that would affect this - I only changed the folder when we launch it so it looks in the right place for a bios (and made the configs live in /opt/retropie/configs/psx/pcsx)

Make sure you are testing with a known working playstation game.

I can't really advise further as it all works here.

Ok but they are known working games, they worked on psxrearmed until I updated but using the hle BIOS of course.

I don't honestly know either because I've only been messing with the 1 problem since 8 o'clock yesterday nothing else.

                          I'll let you know.

Where does the binary you updated get installed, the one inside /opt/retropie/emulators/pcsx-rearmed/ has a file date stamp of 27/11/2016, shouldnt it be todays date?

@a7mag3ddon no - the binary hasn't been changed since November. The reason for doing the update is to get the latest configuration parts triggered from retropie-setup.

                                  ohh..

ok, can you tell me what stuff gets downloaded when updating from binary then so i can try and reverse my issue 1 file at a time until i find out which is causing the yellow screen?

Im just in the process of unzipping the working image so i can get to the original files.

                                  many thanks.

@a7mag3ddon the files in /opt/retropie/emulators/pcsx-rearmed/ are downloaded (the new stuff is the symlinks which are created to redirect the configuration)

That cant possibly be correct, that 1 single change would / should not break the emulator, however.... even though its impossible and shouldn't couldn't it must be true. because that's the only thing i'm doing.

Whats the command to run to create that symlink manually, i will test it on my known working image, if it then does break it then at least we will know.

Im sorry to say that (whilst waiting for another SD to write) i tried deleting the symlinked capital letters link and im still getting that yellow screen on boot so something else must be being installed at the same time ?
