Trying to build/install RetroPie using the steps listed here. All was going well until I received an error building EmulationStation while doing the main/core install. I retried just building EmulationStation but no luck. My log is located here. Ideas?

googled around a bit more and it seems that the error

Warning: end of file not at end of a line; newline insertted

is caused by the compiler running out of memory. I'm now rebuilding using the

      sudo MAKEFLAGS="-j1" ./retropie_setup.sh

like the instructions state to try, will let you know how it goes...

@ElementZero I had the same issue building on my odroids and the J1 thing fixed it for me

Yes, whereas before it was stuck for hours and then finally errored, I can confirm that this already rebuilt with the J1 Flag (took like 15 minutes tops)

          Thanks!

I'm trying to build/install RetroPie on C1 with the exact steps your doing but i'm geting lock up at different percent of installation.
I tried the sudo MAKEFLAGS="-j1" ./retropie_setup.sh but i still lock up.
I wish i could post a log file but the system isnt responding so i cannot paste any infos i took a picture with my phone and the last thing it is doing is this:

6% Building CCX object es-core/CMakerFiles/es-core.dir/src/GuiComponent.cpp.o (end of line is choped from screen)

I'm wondering whats causing the C1 to lock
If someone can aim me where i could maybe find a log showing whats going on i would post it.

@Bust4_Rhymes I can't really help with a lock up - make sure you have decent psu / microsd / cooling etc though.

@BuZz I already got that checked and the problem is not there.
I finally let the C1 sit for a couple hours and it finaly ended wih an error:

Could not successfully build EmulationStation - Frontend used by RetroPie for launching emulators (/home/odroid/RetroPie-Setup/tmp/build/emulationstation/emulationstation not found).

I dig into the log file to find out the exact same error ElementZero had but i am using the

                sudo MAKEFLAGS="-j1" ./retropie_setup.sh

                Full log here
I will reset and do a fourth attempt who knows..

@Bust4_Rhymes your compiler crashed - your system is not stable - too hot ? is it all up to date ? Possibly out of memory - did you make sure you quit the desktop etc when building ?

@Bust4_Rhymes probably was out of memory actually so make sure you dont have a desktop environment running etc.

I succeeded in compiling Emulationstation on my Odroid C0 by using MAKEFLAGS="-j1" in cobination with a swapfile and shutting down the GUI (swapfile on SD-card, Ubuntu and RetroPie installed on eMMc). Without a swapfile gcc stalled at about 26% of the process.

Well i did not kill the GUI so this must be the main cause. My C1 has the oem heatsink with fan and i'm running on 8gb emmc. I read the instruction but i'm having a hard time trying to understand past section where it says"sudo MAKEFLAGS="-j1" ./retropie_setup.sh". So i bet i need to go ctrl+alt+f1 then do "sudo service lightdm stop" then "sudo MAKEFLAGS="-j1" ./retropie_setup.sh" then after i choose the options to install Retropie Basic right?
I made my present attempt like that and i made it to 87% in 15 minutes but now its taking a very long while (+45 minutes)

In my opinion, the most important thing to build Emulationstation successfully on the Odroid is to add a swap file/swap partition. You can use an USB stick, create a partition of the type "linux swap" and enable it from the commandline with "swapon". After using a swap partition on my Odroid C0 Emulationstation compiled on the first attempt (showing slow, but constant progress without bringing the whole system to a grinding halt as before).

@PET2001 i made a swapfile ont a 2g sd card tho it appears to worked but still took a whole lot of time seeing the log file:
Total running time: -16 hours, -35 mins, -41 secs

Now i've been able to roceed further into the procedure but now i'm facing the issue that the GUI is always starting instead of Retropie. I did choose "Option 3: Autostart EmulationStation" but it dont do anything and now i'm not sure what to do next.

@Bust4_Rhymes You need to provide more information about your set-up

Which version of Ubuntu for example ?

(Please do not post a support request without first reading and following the advice in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first) - please start new topic as this issue is actually marked as "solved"

the autostart stuff won't work on Ubuntu 14.04 currently - should be ok on 16.04 though (retropie is best installed on the minimal 16.04 image for odroid c1/c2)

@Buzz Version is 16.04. Finally there is still problem with the installation.: Emulationstation tries to start but i got Error in Mali drivers.
So i'll start over a new topic for that but now i'm a bit tired and frustrated having spend 2 days on something i tought would be a walk in the park but appears to be rocket science...
                                thanks

@Bust4_Rhymes if you want the simplest set up you should just get a RPI. It's better supported. Or look at other options like Lakka.

@BuZz I already own a Rpi3 but as C1 is more powerfull i wanted to give it a try. I Already tried Lakka once but it misses the emulationstation front end and there lot of tool missing compared to RetroPie

I only wished there was an already build image for C1 like the one for RPI but it appears to be in my dreams.
So i'll stop posting here and open a new thread with the proper information.

Thanks for helping me it been beyond my expectation so far :)
