ZDoom questions

@mahcneto also try going into /opt/retropie/configs/ports/doom/ and rename your zdoom.ini. it will create a new one. maybe there is a config setting the old zdoom does not like.
-
@edmaul69 tried permissions, turning the sound on, restarting sound, renamed zdoom.ini to something else, nothing worked, and a new zdoom.ini wasn't created at all and still crashing after selecting an episode
-
@mahcneto did you give permissions to your .wad files? That could be an issue. I wont have a pi to test anything for about a week. Now the sound issue, did you turn on sound, turn up volume, turn up music and set music to timidy or opl synth which will give you music?
-
@edmaul69 just gave permissions to my wads folder, and still nothing. how do you actually turn on the sound? i just set it to OPL and then Restart Sound and nothing happens. Is it using the zdoom.ini at all? since i renamed it, it didn't create anything new on the same folder and it's saving my settings anyways somewhere. sucks that if I update this version of ZDoom i might get sound and everything working, but that silly shoots bugs ruins everything.
-
@mahcneto where is your zdoom.ini located? and are you running just plain old doom 1 & doom 2 for testing?
-
@edmaul69 it took a while to create the zdoom.ini after i renamed it to zdoomm.ini, so it's there now, still crashing though, and it's in /opt/retropie/ports/zdoom/.
I've tried doom 1 and 2, plutonia and TNT only.

I think there is some issues with the current version of ZDoom and their official website states that development of ZDoom has been halted, and there are no plans on future releases. "Consider QZDoom or GZDoom as replacements"
https://zdoom.org/NewsI think QZDoom and GZDoom use OpenGL so they might not be able to be ported to the Raspberry Pi :-(
-
I will switch retropie back to an older version which works.
What's the quickest way to reproduce the issue - so I can find the last version which works well ?
-
@BuZz
I'm actually not sure which version was the last working but this site references ZDoom 2.8.1 as the "last official build"

@backstander I might just roll back to that then. Thanks. I'll get back to you all.

@BuZz best way to test a working version, play doom 2 on the easist difficulty. Sometimes you can kill the first guys sometimes you cant. But you can get to the end of the level really fast as it is short. In the second room which is the end if you cant kill the guy on the elevator or it takes a whole bunch of tries to exit the level it is bad. I thing mediamogul said new version was 2.9? And he put on 2.8 and it was fine. It appears only the last version was messed up.
-
@edmaul69 thanks for the info.

I compiled and have been testing 2.8.0 since the night before last and it seems to be OK. 2.8.1 had a number of issues, but I've since tested 'The Ultimate Doom', 'Doom II' and even beaten 'Chex Quest 1 & 2' without issue in 2.8.0.
-
@mediamogul ok thanks - I'm happy to go to 2.8.0 instead of 2.8.1 - what were the issues btw ?
-
Several reported issues dealt with aiming, firing and the ability to interact with objects. I did read in one forum that all of these problems amount to a single issue with collision detection, which makes sense, but I never saw it confirmed one way or another.
-
@mediamogul Thanks - so it's possible the issue people are seeing was introduced between 2.8.0 and 2.8.1
Just going to test out 2.8.0 now and will update the scriptmodule/binaries when it's done (then I will get back to looking at Stella).

I can pretty much confirm that outright. I couldn't even so much as open a door in 'Chex Quest', or hit an opponent when standing face to face. After downgrading to 2.8.0, I was able to beat the game and it's sequel in no time without issue.
-
Oh thank you guys you're my heroes :D will wait for this
-
@mahcneto in your case you should uninstall zdoom right before you install it. Also delete your ini file by hand. Then when you install it you get a fresh version. Not sure what went wrong for you.
-
Please update zdoom from binary and let me know if it works ok - thanks!
