Pi Zero with Edimax EW-7811Un
-
Does the newest build of RetroPie come pre-installed with the drivers for the Edimax EW-7811Un wifi USB adapter? If not can they be loaded with a USB drive?
-
These use the
8192cu
driver which has been included in Raspbian since 2013 or so. You'll find a lot of old tutorials about compiling the driver from source but this should not be required anymore, just plug in and configure wifi like usual. -
This is the only topic about this bluetooth/wifi dongle...and not too old so thought I would comment:
The Edimax EW-7611ULB combo bluetooth/wifi dongle DOESN'T work in Retropie 4.1.X on a Raspberry Pi Zero. "Compiling" is something that's a foreign topic to 99% of RetroPie users...anything easy? (i.e. a couple terminal commends spelled out exactly would be ideal! ;) - would love to get this to work on a Raspberry Pi Zero with limited ports.
I've already tried other online tutorials written for non-RetroPie (linux systems) as well and none seemed to work - don't know if it's because of the exact flavor of Jessie RetroPie uses or what...
-
@Dochartaigh Did you ever figure this out? I've just picked up the EW-7611ULB and am trying to get it to work with my pi zero
-
It seems to be quite simple "they" say....if you know how to compile on Linux (which I barely even know what that is ;)
If my memory serves I got some of it to work following this tutorial. And this was 2 months ago but I had some problems with it... I think it was something like I got WiFi to work, but then when I got to the Bluetooth part of the directions I wouldn't get that to work in addition to the WiFi (or the WiFi bricked the bluetooth or vice versus....I just gave up - it's NOT worth it to me to spend like 10+ hours on something everybody is telling me is already baked into the software (and/or how it's "so easy" to compile the drivers yourself...). Still have the dongle gathering dust though...
Regardless, all this is kinda pointless for the Zero's now that the W (wireless and Bluetooth) model came out - and cheaper to just buy that instead of this combo dongle.
