N64 emulator not loading roms RPi 3
-
Hi all,
I hope I am posting this all correct and in the correct location.
I have an RPi 3 Model B and I have Retropie on it and it runs ps, snes emulators fine but the n64 I am having trouble with.
Whenever I load a rom it just won't load any picture or sound. It just shows a plain black screen.
I get to the screen where it says PRESS BUTTON TO LOAD MENU etc... and I have tried a few different emulators through that and still no luck.I have tried lr-mupen64 and normal mupen64, mupen64 with glide etc...
I have updated retropie script as well and still no luck.
I have updated all packages as well.Any thoughts ??
Ps - I am a bit of a noob when it comes to the RPi so I am sorry for my stupid question.
Thank You

@tnjfitzy What format / file extension do your ROMs have?
-
Sorry.. I forgot to put that part in but they are either .n64 .v64 .z64
-
@tnjfitzy Is it crashing back to the gamelist or stuck on the black screen? You weren't really clear on that bit. Also, which particular games are you trying to run?
-
@AlexMurphy Stuck on the black screen. I have to use the hotkey shortcut to get back to the game screen.
I have tried several roms and also made sure they were compatible from lists I have read that say they are playable etc... -
@tnjfitzy If it's stuck on a black screen and not crashing out to the gamelist and the hotkey combo works to exit that suggests the ROM is running, at some level. Have you tried games that are known to run best like Mario 64 or Mariokart? Have you messed about with the resolution settings? My advice first is to pick an emulator and stick to it to get it running. Jumping between emulators is just going to complicate things. Set the default as the lr emu whhich is lr-parallel these days.
Edit: Forget parallel, it barely plays audio never mind video. I don't play a lot of N64 or very often but fired up Mario 64 and cycled through the emus. If you have the non-lr mupen64plus-gles2n64 try it. That seems to be playing pretty well at high fps and no audio issues. -
@AlexMurphy Thank you for the replies. When I get a chance I will try the emulator and game you mentioned to see if it works at all and I will post my results.

So I have made sure the Retropie Script was updated.
I updated mupen64 etc... I also installed glupen64 and still no games want to work.
Some of the emulators will load a plain black screen and I have to hotkey select and start to get out of it.
Other emulators just take me back to the rom selection screen. This has really got me puzzled on what is happening. Hopefully someone else has some other ideas.
Thanks for all the ideas so far.

I'm having what seems to be the same problem (and I have posted about it here before).
I too have RPi 3 Model B and none of the "lr-xyz" N64 emulators work.
Only a black screen and then it gets back to the menu.
I have tried the default Retropie image from the website and also all the updates from the RetroPie script.
Nothing works, not even with the default installation.
Other non "lr" emulators work though but I couldn't figure out the gamepad mappings yet. -
@byo at least you can non lr- emulators to work. I cannot get any to work.
I have tried just about everything to get any emulator working for the n64. -
So. I have tried a few more steps to fix this issue.
I have once again updated Retropie Script.
I have removed all the n64 emulators and installed them again and made sure they were updated.
I tried lr-parallel emulator and when I choose that to load a ton it just flicks me back to the rom selection screen.
I have tried changing video mode/ resolution and still no luck.I am avoiding doing a fresh install for now as it took me ages to set everything up to how I have it with the ps4 controller working properly and removing input lag from snes and psx emulators.
If I can't find a fix for the problem within the next 2 days I may just start from scratch again.

@tnjfitzy did you ever figure out what the problem was? I had the same problem and figured a little something out.
