It's also clearly mentioned in the pinned read me first topic.

@namrood The issue is the image. Third party images are not supported for a variety of reasons. 1. It is illegal to distribute copyrighted material. 2. No-one knows how this image was configured, what tweaks it contains or even possible malware included.

@herb_fargus I had an error upgrading retropie through emulationstation. I doubt the image used had anything to do with it. Most likely an SD problem.

I frequent many large gaming communities who have used this image as a way of instantly setting up retropie without having to follow coding instructions etc as it is readymade. It is so popular I find it extremely unlikely to have malware etc. though if you can tell me from the error code that this is likely to be the case that would at least be helpful. Also, you assume there are roms on this image I do not legally own. I am not using retropie illegally, but I do not wish to incriminate this forum or members in any perceived illegality. I do not believe offering help and support based on the error code provided would incriminate anyone but if those are the house rules about third party images then fair enough.

Cool well thanks for explaining - the SD is fried, so I guess I'll start out again with the basic Retropie image like a wholesome young man and try not to screw anything up.

No coding is required to setup RetroPie from the official image. We don't like people distributing images with ROMs - if you cared at all about the project, neither would you.

@namrood Your choice. So, you actually own 10,000 plus cartridges, cassettes, CDs, Laser-discs and all the associated hardware? That's an impressive collection...

Well technically (playing devils advocate not having a go)

                    a) You don't know what is on the third party images or what is kept from them
                    b) As an administrator on this board how could you know what software/hardware anyone here does or does not own? How could you prove I don't own all of this - before refusing to address technical queries on the grounds I don't own the roms I am using?
c)The reality is if RP is only for preservation or legally owned backups then legally-speaking barely anybody would qualify to use it. But it's smart of you to keep a hard line, I understand the necessity of it.

@namrood a) I'm aware of what is contained on the image you referenced. b) I am not an admin, merely a strong supporter of RetroPie. I don't have to prove anything, you on the other hand may have to prove legal ownership of those ROMs. As stated before legality is only one issue when it comes to third party images. Configuration and custom code changes are another. c) the law is the law.

@AlexMurphy Is there a legal difference between websites which host roms and images which contain roms? Genuine question.

I think you guys are right btw, in principle.

@namrood The technicalities will vary from country to country. IANAL but I would say infringement of intellectual property rights and the distribution or downloading of any software containing copyrighted material which you have not purchased through the appropriate channels is probably illegal. I've no wish to get into a legal discussion. My original point stands and it is stated within the rules of the forum. Third party images are not supported.
