Pi 2 Vb vs Pi 3 for Psx performance...
-
Hello,
I'm attempting to budget out what's the best use of my resources. I'd like to buy a bit more memory to handle bulky disc games on my Pi2 vB...but I've also thought about upgrading to the Pi3 for better performance. I don't quite want to do both atm, so I'm trying to figure out which one is a better value.
How is the performance of the psx on the Pi2?
Or put differently...is there a noticeable increase in performance, specifically for the psx, when upgrading from the Pi2 to the Pi3? Are there specifically games that run under full speed on the Pi2 that work flawlessly on the Pi3? I don't like any additional features whatsoever, such as artificially increased resolutions, optional shaders, anti-aliasing, etc.. While wifi is nice, this isn't a selling point for me. My only concern is whether or not the core game emulates at full speed on the unit.
I'm currently in the process of upgrading my older Pi2 from wheezy to jessie, and upgrading the installed emulators themselves before I sit down and try the psx emulation firsthand (figuring that updated software might run better)....this is quite the ordeal. Manually updating the system via scripts from a command prompt isn't quite working out, and flashing in a new image means I have to backup/replace all of the installed roms and custom work for their descriptions -again- on top of this image. If I KNOW that it's worth it to just upgrade the unit, I might as well stop progress on this, write the new image to a new unit, and start the slow, slow process of transferring over roms, while only having to do it once.
Thanks in advance.

Why don't you try all your games and decide? Have you oc'd to 1Ghz? Most games run fine. Games with a higher native res like Tekken3 will get slowdowns but I'm upscaling to 1080P and using the crtpi shader.
I'm using a 128GB usb stick for all my games so I'll never need to re-transfer them. Download or convert multi disc games and normal games to .PBP psp eboots to save yourself some space.
Wheezy to Jessie? Ouch..start over. I tried and failed.

do you get any slowdown now? i don't recall ever* getting any in either pi2 or 3 for psx at default settings.
- tekken 3 has some very subtle hitches but i believe they are either inherent in the emulation, or a bottleneck that is in both the pi2 and 3 - i get the same similar hitches in both.

@dankcushions Yes. 52-53fps without crtpi shader, 51-52fps with it on.
My main frustration atm is snes since I get lots of drops with 2010 with shader, wild guns has bad soundfx in 2005 (maybe more but im not testing every game) and 2002 audio works but there's color inaccuracies like in Megaman x. That alone is making me want a pi3.

Thanks, that's essentially the information I was looking to hear. I've since got a new image flashed to my Pi2, and have been testing games. So far, everything is awesome, and I don't notice any slowdown whatsoever. The scraping, in particular, is now so much better, hitting many, many roms that it couldn't resolve before. I don't think it's going to be necessary for me to upgrade to Pi3 just yet, and, instead, I'm going to invest in more memory.
I'm trying to wrap my head around how the Pi handles multidisk games, using the .pbp format you suggested. From what I understand, some games won't work this way, such as FFVIII, correct? Is there a rule of thumb to this, like disc games that hit the 3-4 size typically won't work? I ask because I'm primarily interested in playing a lot of those older jRPGs, which were often multi-disc.
After that, I'm finally going to figure out how to use two controllers at once, lol.
Btw, just a word to anyone reading this for advice...if you flash in a new version of Debian/Emulation Station onto an older Pi2 to get up to date, and you used WinSCP to transfer roms, you have to manually go into raspi-config, from the RetroPie menu, and enable SSH for the file-transferring to work now, otherwise your connection will be refused...took me a while to sort this out, lol.

I got intermittent jerkiness and half second freezes when i would play psx on a Pi2 at regular settings, it was annoying enough that i didnt include it on my older build.
I noticed it ran better on a pi 3 for sure. But this was also over a year and a half ago, so newer software could have improved performance.

no, it works fine with pbp

@Capeman Were you overclocking? I haven't seen anything like that yet...but I haven't been testing for too long now.

I had the pi 2 set to one of the default overclock choices that you could pick in the raspi config tool, i didn't do anything custom.
