I am trying to get psp iso's to play on my Pi, the problem is no matter which game I use i just get a black screen. The emulator recognizes the games, but it cannot process them. Does the PI have a powerful enough gpu to handle these sorta games?

@bob1352 did you unzip the files? Some games run good. Some games are sloooooooow. Ape escape .iso file plays perfect. I recommend testing with that one. Then trying other games.

@edmaul69 Yeah So far, I checked F1 2009... its performance SUCKS... I'm about to try FIFA 2006 World Cup. Link below says, that it works ok on Pi2, but I will see, if it's gonna run neatly on my hardware...

It can run PSP games, but most have performance issues. It also really depends on the game.

I can get decent performance, but I am running a Pi3 @1350 MHz with a 5 Overvolt and 500 MHz Core and 500 MHz RAM clocks. In order to even run PSP games, I am running an old ran I grapped from the back of a dead PC powersupply and wired to runn off a 12V wall wart. It's loud and maybe a bit overkill for most Retropie systems, but the PSP emulator would overheat and cause thermal shutdowns with no additional cooling. With this loud fan, it'll stay nice and cool.

That said, a lof of games are pretty slow even with this setup. Pushing the OC further didn't really hep much and cause other stability issues (it also required runnign the fan full time, wheras the 1350 MHz setup runs most 8 and 16 bit stuff without needing extra cooling).

I also get decent performance in PSP emulation just using the default lr-ppsspp or whatever its name is. I have also increased the native resolution slightly. Games are a case by case basis. Some run in a playable fashion and some don't. I have the same overclock settings that mrbwa1 mentioned except my overvolt is 3 instead of 5. Run's stable with no crashes.

Here Is my rpi3b+ PPSSPP compatibility list, I think it can be viewed in spread32 or OpenOffice and excel and I haven't updated it in a while. I don't totally recommend the OC listed in the spreadsheet but it was what I used at the time, adjusted the arm set to <1556 and PICovervolt to 733 is what I use now. It isn't a big deal for any emulation though.

Oh and popolocrois doesn't work well, very poor framerate on rpi3b+, I played it on actual PSP and couldn't remember. And final fantasy type-0 doesn't play very well, but I played it for several hours with the right settings there are still some sequences of gameplay that are really slow(overworld map wars)

Also the Homebrew apps, Cavestory-Jenkas nightmare, Bookr(pdfviewer), and Modo(mod player) work. The PDF viewer leaves something to be desired, pretty slow and I think the menu bugs out if the settings aren't adjusted.

Good general default settings: PSP res x1, hardware transform enable, retain cache disable, AA off.

@Efriim Ive done some overclocking tests with PPSSPP and its core_freq and sdram_freq that make the biggest difference with performance. I ran "top" while running a couple psp games and I never saw the CPU go much above 50% so I dont think overclocking ARM will help.
