      @CCoker hi.

I'm still going to point you to the "read this first" link in most pages of the forum (on my phone so can't easily get it here), but usually - without knowing the error message - you'll likely have the wrong ROM set for the emulators you're trying to use.

Search the forum for similar threads of arcade games not running, and you'll find plenty of guidance as well, though the documentation page on managing your arcade games should be the first step.

Choose an emulator (MAME 2003 likely)
Find the right ROM set described in the documentation
      Use those ROMs

      Best of luck.

@CCoker not at all - let us know how you fare. If you need any particular recommendation of emulators for specific games you're looking for, let us know but overall that's the best guidance. The majority of games run well on lr-mame-2003 or lr-fbalpha so I'd start with those.

Apologies for not linking the actual pages I mentioned, but it's tricky on the phone.

          Welcome to the community!

            Hello,

does the mame emulator show up on the ES selection screen? If not it is most likely the rom .zip format that is the problem.

I recently downloaded some roms that were in a .rar zipped file and did not show up in the game select menus until re-zipped as .zip

            Regards,
            E

when I put the roms into any of the mame folders it don't work.

This is easily solved. When you say I can only find answers for 3.2, it is the same for 4.2. If your MAME roms are not working then you do not have the correct romset for the emulator that you are using. It is as simple as that. There are about 900 posts asking this very same question. MAME is not like NES and SNES. You cannot download a rom and expect it to work. Read the Arcade guide here. Then read this. If you think it's too much to read I can summarize:

              1. Choose an emulator - choose lr-mame2003
              2. Acquire a full MAME set for that Emulator - acquire the 0.78 romset
              3. Play
              4. Never download roms and use trial and error, you will go insane.

                Hello,
haven't had much time over the weekend to do anything I'm going to free up some time later to try and download a rom set but I had a look and the roms downloaded was 0.184 also my MacBook automatically unzips my folders when I download them hopefully this shouldn't make a difference I haven't yet had the mame emulator show up on the ES section screen.

                Thanks

@CCoker As we said, if the Rom set version isn't the correct one for the emulator, that WILL not work. In this case, if you're downloading 0.184, that is not going to work on MAME 2003, as it needs 0.78 - a completely different set.

Also, the ROMs cannot be unzipped, at least for MAME. So yes, those are two big problems in this case.

It will make a difference and the 0.184 set is of no use to you. See my previous post on what to read and follow.

                      hello,
been online trying to find some 0.78 roms but I can't seem to find any, keeps coming up with forums and obviously because of rules can not say where they get the roms from, clearly my googling skills are not that good however I did find one website that said it was mame 0.78 roms but it was just a long paragraph of codes? all the other roms I have I had to download ?

                      thanks

If you had read this and followed it like I said above, you would have had success. In particular....

@rbaker No - and I'm getting fed up with people trying to help others find roms. Telling people exactly what to search for is against the spirit of the rules - I shouldn't have to spell it out. If someone cannot obtain roms - that's their problem.

                          You should know better.

Sorry about that. I learned it from here during my build. Thought it was ok.

@rbaker I have now removed that post too. (@dankcushions please do not give exact instructions on how to use google to download roms). I have noticed recently people are doing this more and more. I don't see much of a difference from providing a link to telling people how to search to get a link. Feels like people are trying to bend the rules without breaking them, and I am not ok with it.
