Fresh Install and SSH

Hello guys,

I've just flashed an image of the 3.7 version of retropie and i was wondering if it is possible to connect directly to the terminal with ssh. I've tried with putty and got this error: "Network error: Connection refused". I don't know much about this topic. Should I need to use a monitor and keyboard to do an initial setup and then be able to use putty or am I doing it wrong? I tried using putty by directly connecting by ethernet cable the raspberry pi and my laptop and checking the ip on my laptop to connect, maybe here is the problem.

I am using a respberry pi 2, and retropie 3.7 img.

SSH is enabled by default. Perhaps you are trying to connect to the wrong IP address or port. Connect the RPI to your router, and get the IP address from the RetroPie menu on Emulation Station. Don't connect it directly to the PC (unless you are happy to use fixed ip addresses, or if your PC is assigning an IP to the RPI)

The problem is that i dont have any monitor to do that. I think that my PC assigns an IP to the RPI but for some reason it doesnt works. I dont mind having a static IP, but right now i dont know how to do that exactly. To do that should i plug my sd to PC and modify a file? Probably rc.local?

Connect the RPI to the router, and try and access it by name "retropie"

I recommend you get a screen from somewhere for set-up though.

@BuZz If you are using a windows pc there is a small program called "wifiguard" that you can use to find what is on your local network. You can find it at https://www.softperfect.com/products/wifiguard/. Just install it and run it. It's free and I have been using it for years. They also have other programs you may want to try.

I finally got access to the terminal. Is there a way i can see the retropie menu in my pc through terminal. I tried vncserver but i get problems, is this because the retropie menu is not a proper desktop?

What is it you are trying to achieve?
If its just to configure RetroPie via a terminal interface you can use the menu here

sudo /home/pi/RetroPie-Setup/retropie_setup.sh

There is no desktop environment in RetroPie. You can access the RetroPie setup menu via the RetoPie menu entry in EmuulationStation (ES). ES is what you actually see on the TV/monitor that you've connected your Pi to.You can go to:

RetroPie munu item --> scroll to 'RetroPie setup' --> press Enter

Thanks for your advise. What I'm trying to archieve it to see the EmulationStation on my laptop screen via ethernet. I don't think that is possible. I tried a vncserver and when i connected with the viewer there was just a grey screen.

I think that's impossible too. I think you need a Desktop Environment for that. And RetroPie has none per default. You might try installin LXDE though. I instaled RetroPie on top of Raspbian and Raspbian comes w/ LXDE per default. If I were you I wouldn't invest much time in it though.
