lr-pcsx-rearmed CD drive help?

I often see home made Raspberry Pi based clone consoles that run games off the original game cartridges by using things like Retrode. However I am yet to see DIY PSX clone consoles that are able to play games off of their original media, which I find a little strange considering that USB DVD drives are much cheaper and easier to come by than Retrode adapters. Is there anyway to use a USB DVD drive like this one to play official factory pressed PS1 game discs using retro pie? Maybe creating a link to /dev/cdrom in the roms folder?

@someitalian123 not possible on pi. Not sure if this os out yet but it lets you play a lot of original cart/cd's and use the original controllers. This is probably the coolest device for using original hardware and software.
