Updated Kodi to 17.3 - Receiving exception message upon exit

Hello Community!

I recently performed an update of RetroPie and all operating system level updates.

One update was for Kodi from 17.1 to 17.3; after updating to Kodi 17.3 the following message appears upon exiting Kodi (Power Button > Exit) which causes a brief pause before returning to EmulationStation:

Exception SystemExit in (function _remove at 0x66bc1870) ignored

It's important to note that the same message appears when you relaunch Kodi.

So, the following questions come to mind:

Could the issue stem from how EmulationStation is opening Kodi?
Does anyone know if this is an issue specific to Kodi?
Is this an issue with RetroPie (and its updated components)?
Is this is an issue with the underlying operating system (and its updated components)?

I look forward to anyone's comments or suggestions; I'll be posting a similar message on Kodi's forum.

@ibro Well I can't reproduce that on a clean installation, but just ignore that. The "Exit" function in Kodi on the Raspberry Pi, never worked good, it depends on what you configured and installed, sometimes Kodi crashes on Exit. It is a well known a very old bug on the Pi, that unfortunately never got fixed. Probably because most Kodi devs use a dedicated, embebedded OS, that doesn't have the "Exit" function available.
But nothing serious, nothing gets damaged, it just takes more time to quit.

PS: The same message doesn't reappear when you launch Kodi again, it just stays in the console from the last time you exited.

Exit on Kodi works great on my system.

It always turns the TV off though. 😂

Well, thats because you have Kodi installed from some time now, it doesn't happen anymore on new Kodi installs. But you can change that, to not turn the TV off on Exit, on Kodi CEC settings.

Would you be willing to provide a snippet of the script that's used to launch Kodi on your system?

I believe it's located at the following path:

/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/kodi/kodi.sh

I found a potential solution, but I do not know if it'll work for everyone.

The script under /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/kodi/ had the following line:

sudo kodi

I changed it to read as follows:

kodi-standalone

I did not receive the Exception SystemExit in (function _remove at 0x66bc1870) ignored message.

I used to have Noobs installed with retropie and Kodi. Both of them had a shortcut to one another. When I was in retropie and selected Kodi, the system rebooted to Kodi and vice versa. The only thing you need to change in the script is that it automatically starts to a partition on the SD card.

Now I just have two dedicated SD cards, which I find a lot more convenient.

I understand that, however, I'm using the RetroPie image, not the NOOBs image.

I'm launching Kodi from EmulationStation and not using any type of dual-boot, multi-partition method.

@ibro Yeah, whenever I want to hear the second half of an album I just swap my SD card out. It's super convenient. Plus the BOOT loader steals 2GB of my card...

I liked the setup, and didn't care about the space. I had a 16 gb SD card, but played (all most) everything from usb.
On the Kodi side, it connects to my Nas so I don't need a large expensive SD card.
